ISSYP 2020

@australianboa Thank you for informing me! Also, I totally agree with what you said. I really appreciate their efforts to host an online program despite the difficult conditions.
@thethirdnarwhal I’m rooting for you as well! Even though it will be online, I’m sure ISSYP will be an amazing experience for you! Do update us about your decision.

I know it goes without saying, but stay safe people!

I read the email today and I’m so sad that the program won’t be happening in person, though I understand it’s the safest decision right now. About the time zones, I personally feel that ISSYP should have allowed students outside of American time zones to decide for themselves if the time of day of the online program was workable (especially since there’s not much else going on rn in quarantine anyway) but I understand that doing so most likely would have made things much more logistically complicated for them. There are also undoubtedly things about this process that I’m not fully aware of, so I trust ISSYP to make the best decisions possible.

@utkarshbajaj03 @australianboa and @anhe2021 You all sound like you’re going to do amazing things in physics (and in science in general) with or without ISSYP. Your passion for the subject is palpable even across the world <3, so I can’t wait to see what you’ll discover one day. This pandemic will be over eventually :slight_smile:
If you all aren’t seniors right now, you may be able to do the program next year…perhaps I’ll see you there :smile:

Thank you so much for the good lucks! I will certainly let you all know the decision I get from the program. I certainly hope I get in, :smile: but even if I don’t, it’s been very cool to “meet” other passionate physics nerds through this forum regardless of ISSYP.

Is there any chance decisions are released well before June 1? I feel like that’s pretty late, especially considering that ISSYP is so selective and rejected applicants will need time to make other summer plans.

@aCoolishDude As far as I know, they’re released on April 30th :slight_smile:

@aCoolishDude I agree that June 1st seems late, so I think decisions COULD come out before that, but based on the fact that they said June 1st specifically, if they released any earlier, it would probably be mid-May at the earliest.

Where are you from?

Hey there! I applied to the program, and I’m from India!
Btw, @utkarshbajaj03 How did you get your book published? It’s a remarkable feat to learn Differential Geometry and Tensor Analysis over few months!

I’m from New York. What about you? I just have another program that I need to accept soon.

I am an international applicant. It was so disappointing to see that they restricted the online participation to only certain time zones. They might have had a strong reason to do so.

Did you guys ask them about maybe giving consideration to those who might be willing to stay up all night?

@australianboa @utkarshbajaj03 @OmG1706

@thethirdnarwhal all the best! I hope you get in :slight_smile:

Decisions were supposed to be today, right?

@aCoolishDude
Are you an international student? Did you get your decisions?

I got my decision this morning and I got in! If anyone else was accepted, please pm me and I’ll start a groupchat. For those who might be waitlisted, the deadline to accept or decline the offer for us is June 8th, so you might hear around that time. According to the email, ISSYP is planning to send more materials to all participants on June 29th, so you’ll almost certainly know by then.

If you did not get an email, does that mean you were rejected? Do those who were rejected receive an email?

Yeah, I have not received anything either.

@StarMen1 @PhYsIcS_NeRd , on the page where I am supposed to register, it says,

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ISSYP 2020 will be held online. All selected and waitlisted candidates were notified by email on Monday, June 1, 2020.”

(you might be able to find this if you go back to your application on surveymonkey, I’m not sure) …so I think that if you didn’t get an email today, you unfortunately likely weren’t accepted or waitlisted. Definitely check your spam folders if you haven’t already and you can also check the 2020 class list on the ISSYP website to see if your name is there.

All bois and gals who weren’t in GMT -2 to GMT -7 time zones have been fkd over by the Perimeter Institute.
@thethirdnarwhal Congrats! I’m sure it’ll be a great experience!

We weren’t even considered

@thethirdnarwhal congrats!!
@OmG1706 did you ask them?

@labracadabrador Read the email more carefully. They said “Unfortunately, online participation will be limited to students residing within North, Central, and South American time zones (GMT -2 to -7); students residing outside of these areas will not receive further program communication.”
See? We weren’t even considered

Yeah! I did read that. But I was wondering if you tried asking them. Never mind.
It doesnt matter now
