It sucks if you're Asian but what if...

you’re Wasian? My dad’s Chinese and my mom’s white. I know there probably wouldn’t be a big boost, but I’m curious as to what your theories are. Would they just count you as a 100% Asian? Would you have a chance halfway in between the chances of an Asian and a white person?

In the end, you’re still an over-represented minority and/or a non-minority.
And since your dad is Asian, most colleges will assume that you’re Asian.

hahaha…I guess I’m “Wasian” too. Never heard that before…But it probably only matters if you’re an URM.

I thought the culturally au courant identifier was HAPA (which I assume stands for “half Asian-Pacific American”).

You are the wave of the future. There are lots and lots (and lots!) of people with ethnic backgrounds like yours at Harvard and elsewhere. It won’t hurt you, and it certainly doesn’t make you unique.

Amusingly enough, there is actually an organization at Harvard called Harvard HAPA, but it doesn’t stand for “Half Asian-Pacific American” as it usually does. Rather, it’s the Harvard Half-Asian People’s Association.

This question is asked on CC from time to time, but I’ve never seen an authoritative answer about how ethnicity affects Hapa’s admissions chances.

My kids are Hapa but self identify as (mostly) white. I don’t think their ethnicity helped or hindered their admissions (Princeton and Duke).

Anecdotally, from what I’ve seen, multiracial kids are far from underrepresented at top schools, and my guess is that they are neither favored or disfavored in the admissions process.

I agree with JHS. You are the future, and the future is here and now.

Good luck.

“Hapa” is the Hawaiian word for half (originally hapa-haole or half white) but is used to refer to people with mixed racial heritage. My kids are hapa and you can always argue that they bring a unique viewpoint because they straddle different cultures.

Thanks for the interesting responses everyone!
