It was a good day

So it’s the first day of school, it’s 5:30, and we’re about to finish our first department meeting with all the students and faculty, and I’m about to introduce the freshmen when Elizabeth Saltzgiver, our audience services director, waves at me from the back of the Fritsche Theatre in Cowan Hall. She stands up with her white iphone in her hand and says that she has Liz Shivener, who graduated three months ago today, on the phone. Liz has no idea where Elizabeth is. But her news is that she’s just been cast as Belle in the national tour of Beauty and the Beast. And to make it even better, her boyfriend, Steve Czarnecki, who also graduated in the class of 2009, will be understudying Gaston and the Beast. So they get to be together on tour for the next year or so. The room went crazy. Best opening day we’ve ever had.

And… a note to long-time friends–our first grandchild, Robyn Esther, is four months old today.

Wow! Great news, doctorjohn. You must be very proud. Hopefully we can congratulate you in person as we plan to visit next month. Have a great year!

Congrats to both of your recent alums, John!

DoctorJohn, thanks for sharing this wonderful news; my daughter will be even more thrilled since she got to know Liz quite well last year (and Steve is from a town only about 15 miles from us).

Congratulations John; on both your students and your granddaughter! Have a great time spoiling that little one :-)

I thoroughly intend to spoil her

Thanks to all of you for the kind words.
