Ithaca Park School [$36k] vs Oberlin [$62k, not ED] [possible film major]

$36K vs $62K? That’s &100K over 4 years. And the kid likes the $36K school. Tough to walk away from that deal.

I’ll add to that about the cost difference and the fact that your kid really likes Ithaca. Doesn’t seem like a decision at all.

My soon to be film grad kid is looking to make $20 an hour working for a studio post graduation - if lucky. They had an amazing big studio internship last summer with a .5% acceptance rate and been on set as a production coordinator for several hit netflix shows, monday night football and commercial shoots plus part time script reader while in school.

Jobs are hard to come by in the industry and that savings sure could come in handy to help support your child post grad. If money is not a concern, then not an issue.

This is the best advice thus far in this thread. If Ithaca does not work out for your son, then it was a $27,000 lesson versus a $62,000 lesson at Oberlin. And if Ithaca does work out, then it is a savings of at least $140,000 over 4 years of undergraduate study.

My son is currently a junior film major at Ithaca. He turned down other well regarded film schools (Syracuse, DePaul), as well as schools with higher prestige. Ithaca just felt right to him, and he has been thriving there. I don’t know much about Oberlin’s film offerings, but it never came up in our search of top film schools, so I’m not sure how robust a program they have. My suggestion would be to visit Oberlin and see how it compares to Ithaca. If your son is truly interested in film, he should take into account the type of equipment available and how much hands on time he will get in production. Also, the number of film graduates they produce and where they go - alumni connections in the industry are very valuable. Reach out if you have any further questions!

Does he still feel like he made the right choice?

Yes! He couldn’t be happier.
