It's a crapshoot, but....

Admissions are crapshoot…yes I am aware that you cannot possibly guarantee my admission chances at Georgetown but I am very anxious to hear some feedback…I am aware of my low SAT’s…I am retaking them in the fall…so with that in mind, what do you think my “chances” are at getting into this college?

2nd generation Korean-American
Born in Georgia, now residing in suburbs in California
Income bracket <40,000

GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.67 weighted
Rank: 4/517 (for now…I think I will be moving up to 2/517 by next year)
PSAT: 190

SAT II: 660 Math IIC, 670Bio E, 710 US History—retaking in Nov.

Special Circumstances: nothing really, except that I moved from GA to CA in the second semester of my sophomore year and that GA did not offer AP classes to sophomores…so I technically had only 1 semester of AP World History…

10th:
AP World History: A (5 on exam)

11th:
Pre-IB Pre Calc/AP Calc AB: A
AP English Language: A
AP US History: A
AP Biology: A

12th:
AP English
AP Calculus BC
AP Art History
AP Govt
AP Economics
AP Physics

EC’s:

 1. National Honor Society 2 years

California Scholarship Federation 2.5 years

Latin Club 4 years (founder/instructor)
I had previously taken Latin in GA however, moving to CA which did not offer Latin, I decided to create a latin club and teach latin I and the culture to those interested)
I also took the National Latin Exam for Latin I and got bronze medal

Future Doctors of America 2 years (founder/co-president)
Basically, we bring guest speakers to our club meetings (neurosurgeons to pediatric cardiologists) who talk about their occupations, do volunteer work at local hospitals/Red Cross, and provide hands on experience to those interested in pursuing a medical profession.

LiNK-Liberty in North Korea 3 years (co-secretary/promotions director/public relations)
Spreading awareness upon the humanitarian crisis in North Korea and doing humanitarian activist promotions (ie: organized an all-day LiNK awareness assembly at school, protests in front of the Chinese Embassy in LA, sending petitions to various embassies and release North Korean detainees, host a benefit concert and raise $5,000 for SAFE Haven orphanages in China that are posts involved in an Underground Railroad to help NK refugees) I am a great advocate for this cause while many ppl in my church have dissapproved b/c they feel that I am simply straining the already tense relations our motherland: SKorea and NKorea and US. Nevertheless, I this issue itself is my passion and energy not only b/c of the horrendous atrocities being committed right under noses but also b/c some of my family members are in NKorea right now…and so, its not only a matter of human decency but of ultimate necessity.

Model UN 2 years (cofounder/activities director)
My involvement in LiNK led me to intiate our school’s 1st MUN chapter. (our school just opened in 2004…hence our class is the 1st graduating class for 2007!)

If you get your SATs up a bit, I think you’re in. The Latin thing, starting a club and teaching it, is pretty cool.

Yep, SATs are really the only thing holding you back. However, perhaps a sport or something like that would help your ECs too, but the SATs are WAYY more important.

I also thought about retaking the Act in sept…what are your thoughts?

I took the Act for the first time in june and here are my stats

34 English
30 Math
29 Reading
23 Science (ran out of time…but I know I can increase that to at least a 30)
Composite: 29—ouch

Essay 12

my goal is a 33/34 do you think that would be possible to obtain and if so would that be better than retaking the Sats in oct?

sorry, idk if i just missed it or if u didnt include what school u wanted to be in…but in anycase, ur “resume” is definitely good enough to content with other applicants… You’ve probably heard this, but the thing that’s gonna make you stand out and get you in or keep you out is probably gonna be your essay. So just work really hard on that and choose a topic that you’re passionate about. I agree with a previous post that said u starting that latin club was impressive…it is. maybe if u can highlight that a little more in your app. good luck.

thanks…honestly I am surprised by the amount of responses I have received about my involvement in latin…I am not Catholic, I am acutally protestant:p but I guess b/c of the Jesuit history of Georgetown, Latin is a huge deal. funny b/c in california ppl really don’t care…lol

would anyone else like to contribute? :)

whats wrong with that? i got in with a 29…i got in with an 1170 SAT too haha…scores are not the be-all-end-all.

but you must have other hooks: sports/outstanding ecs/great essay…?something!!!

I have nothing…except for a few mediocre ecs and an all too common looking transcript…with test scores that do not seem to coincide with my gpa…life sucks…

lol its not all that complicated…i was a good student…A’s/B’s (3.8 uw/4.5 w gpa)…i was on a varsity sport…but average…i did get involved with my school though…SGA/Band/etc…im a transfer student…so i did a couple things in college like fencing…but basically i have a love for the chinese language…and photography…so i just capitalized on what i liked. DONT DONT DONT BE AFRAID TO HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR IN YOUR APPLICATION!

just work with what you have…have fun with it. =) it makes it all more enjoyable. theres no point in worrying about what you think you lack when the adcoms can LOVE what you do have.

well i do enjoy all of the things that I do but i really think my sats are a hinderance on my profile…while in your case you got accepted, i really think you are the exception…with its prestige, high number of applicants, and high sat/act average i think i may need to improve in order to make myself more competitive within the applicant pool…so stressful…I can’t wait for this to be all over…but then I don’t want to have regrets so if there is any more comments it would be greatly appreciated thanks!

what college are you trying to get into?

Georgetown College or the School of Nursing and Health Studies-haven’t decided yet

ok. well…especially at georgetown…its important to show character in your app…everything else will fall into place. I’m in the SFS and I spoke to a fellow SFS’er who is a friend of mine…and she explained that while everyone in the SFS may be different…there’s still this ONE thing that really kinda just connects them all together…but we dont know what it is. So perhaps if you just be yourself in your Gtown app…youll have that one thing youre not aware of that they may be looking for in the College.

thanks… i also have another question…I am an avid Protestant and at times do not agree with many tenets of Catholicism. Nevertheless, I respect their traditions and do not look down upon the denomination in any way whatsoever. However, I fear that I may feel uncomfortable with the strong presence of the Jesuit background. Do you think that is the case? If not could you validate your opinion with experience/facts/etc…thanks

Sure. I’m Jewish and I’m here for the summer, and I’m having absolutely no problems.

yeah you should have no problems…they dont force any catholic beliefs upon you…i have hindu and muslim friends who have no problems with Gtown at all. I’m actually a catholic but I sit in church (whenever I go) and dont agree with some of the teachings of the church so it shouldn’t be too bad.

thanks for the reassurance! :)
