The Justice Department has approved a much-anticipated merger between Delta and Northwest today, clearing the way for the creation of the world’s largest airline.

<p>Sighs, I really dislike Delta. I hope I never have to transfer to another flight in Atlanta.</p>

The company known as Northwest Airlines is gone starting today, but the brand’s identity will stick around for at least another year.</p>

<p>Passengers can still book a Northwest flight and planes will still sport their distinctive red tail fins today, even though Delta Air Lines and Northwest closed on their merger Wednesday to create the world’s largest airline.</p>

<p>Detroit now becomes Delta’s second-biggest hub and will play a key role domestically and internationally.</p>

<p>“We think Detroit is a great addition for us,” said Glen W. Hauenstein, executive vice president for network planning and revenue management.

<p>I have been flying between the east coast and Detroit on Northwest for years. We have always had great service, few delays, no lost luggage. I hope Delta retains the hub and that we have as good an experience with the new company. Got my Christmas visit flights booked…probably my last on the old Northwest Airlines.</p>

<p>I haven’t flown Northwest in years but I remember the excellent service they provided. I stopped flying with them only because they were always a bit higher $$ than everyone else. As for Delta, their once great reputation hit the skids YEARS AGO. Remember when Delta employees were so proud of their employer that they purchased a plane and gave it as a gift to the company? Boy was that a long time ago! Nothing but contention between Delta and its workers in recent years.</p>
