Itunes Library Separation Now? DD is Freshman

Up to now we’ve all shared music. DD listens to odd Japanese music which she doesn’t buy on Itunes. Maybe 75% of her music comes from other sources.

So if she wants to download more music at college (not Itunes) she doesn’t have a way to get it on her Ipod, because the home computer with the main music library will be 4 hours away. If she got everything on Itunes it wouldn’t be a problem with the new cloud stuff. Every few months at home she could sync.

Am I missing something obvious? Should we set up her own Itunes account on her new laptop and separate our music now?

S1 will be a junior next year and we still share an itunes account. I am not quite sure how it works, but every time he makes a purchase (our c card is on file) the bill summary comes to my email. We each have our own playlists on the home computer and it is easy to share music. (even Grandma uses our password to buy songs) The only time it has been an issue was when we first got the iphones with icloud. When he came home for break his phone did some sort of and automatic cyber cloud link to my computer and when I went to update my phone, I ended up with all his contacts and playlists. Now he turns off icloud when he is home.

I believe he is able to sign on remotely from his laptop and access our itunes account.

Our phones are also our ipods so maybe that is why it works.

I never use itunes any more - you can get mediamonkey for free - or pay a little extra for the full version. No problem getting things on or off your ipod. I actually stopped using my ipod - it’s easier to put my music on my phone and I like only carrying one device.

She should copy the iTunes library to her own computer. Once it’s copied, she should be able to sync her iPod with her own computer. She can also add music from non-iTunes sources and it will only add to her computer’s iTunes library, which will then be synced with her iPod.

See the site below for info about Home Sharing. She can still continue to use the same shared iTunes account log-in to download music from iTunes.

Amazon has good deals on music, also if she wants more japanese stuff, she should look into amazon.jp for it.

I’ve wondered about this too-- we use “home sharing” on Itunes all the time…will that still work when D is four hours away, as long we still share the same account?

Gwen, I believe that to use home sharing, all users have to be on the same WiFi network, so it wouldn’t work when your D is away.

However, I believe that if someone buys a song or app on an iTunes account, someone else can log in to that account and re-download the purchase, even if they are not in the same physical location. So if you/your D buy something on iTunes, all of you should be able to download it on your own computers/devices.

Thank you, Bulldogblue! That makes perfect sense.

Thank you!
