I was told by my son that IU-B has knocked down Ashton and now broken ground on a larger dorm building scheduled to open in Fall 2010.

Apparently, the area surrounded by 10th street on the north, Sunrise Drive on the west, 7th street on the south, and Union on the east has been gutted, and the new dorm building will be going up shortly. I guess the idea is to make the accommodations similar or better than what students find when they live off-campus.

I don’t know if this will be called Ashton, or a new name will be created. I presume it will be part of the Central Neighborhood.

I never heard anything about that the past few times I’ve been down there… or seen any equipment. The last time I was there was about three weeks ago.

hmm… where are they going to put all those kids during the 09 year?

They didn’t tear down anything. There was a wide open field w/ a few trees in between eigenmann and ashton, and that is where they are building the dorms. I can actually see the construction right outside my window (I live in Eigenmann). They started on it in the beginning on april.

yeah in the new student housing guide i got earlier it outlined where these dorms would be and said theyd be opening in fall 2010
question is… will there be a mad rush for this housing since its BRAND NEW?

maxellis–I’m going to have to disagree with you. You are correct in that there was a field in the area of Ashton previously, but Ashton buildiings were definitely demolished last summer. I saw it with my own eyes driving through the area numerous times last year. Perhaps the construction is beginning with those that you are seeing now?

I also know this because some of my old college friends came to visit last summer and were surprised to find their old dorms demolished.

Ashton as it existed 2008-2009 is not being torn down. My son already has his reservation for Ashton Johnston in 2009-2010. The biggest affect for next year’s Ashton students is that the parking lots bordering the east side of Ashton were closed for good last month to make room for the new dorm.

You can see on this old map the five Ashton buildings immediately across the street from, and west of, Eigenmann that were torn down before the 2008-2009 school year to make room for the new dorm that is being built now. You can see the parking lot east of current Ashton that is now gone permanently.

I am on campus right now and have been all year and can tell you that Ashton most certainly has not been torn down. What you may have been referring to was “Old Ashton” which was replaced quite a number of years ago.

The work in progress, currently called “New Ashton” will be composed mostly of apartments in several buildings and a main building that will contain classrooms as well as a dining facility. I sat on a board at which we were able to see building plans and a presentation about the finished product. I can say that they will be very nice accomodations and will be open primarily to upperclassmen who want live on campus.
