IU Chemistry Department for Pre-Med?

IU Graduate school is pretty good as ranked 34th by US News.

[Rankings - Chemistry - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-chemistry-schools/rankings)

Is the Chemistry undergraduate school very tough for giving low scores for the following courses or their honor counterparts? I heard about some professors at another college had special treatment for students with Pre-med as the career goal.

CHEM-C 117 Principles of Chemistry and Biochemistry I
CHEM-C 341 Organic Chemistry I Lectures
CHEM-C 342 Organic Chemistry II Lectures
CHEM-C 343 Organic Chemistry I Laboratory 3
CHEM-N 330 Intermediate Inorganic Chemistry

How about the biology department?

Biological sciences, 8-10 credit hours
(one academic year) BIOL-L 111, 112, and 113 or
BIOL-L 112, 113, and 211

I suggest you check out the following links:

[Schedule of Classes: Office of the Registrar: Indiana University Bloomington](http://registrar.indiana.edu/scheofclass.shtml)

[Grade Distribution Database: Office of the Registrar: Indiana University Bloomington](http://registrar.indiana.edu/gradedist.shtml)

The first link allows you to look up who has taught each of the courses you listed in previous semesters.

Then go to the second link and use one of the items listed there (probably the one requesting previous grades for a semester for a particular professor) to determine the average grades given in each class.

For example, if I look up CHEM C341 (Organic Chemistry I) I see that in Spring 2009, many of the courses were taught by Widlanski. (using the “student” schedule of classes list).

Then using the “Instructor” link under the second link above, I find that the average GPA in Widlanski’s classes for CHEM C-341 was 2.476 It also said that the average GPA of the students in the class (their GPAs prior to taking the course was 3.208) This means that this was a very difficult class–and was graded accordingly. Either that or Widlanski is a very tough grader.

Anyway, you can look up the averages for all of these courses in the same way.

Calcruzer,

Thanks for the great info. It (C-341) does look like a tough one. However, the distribution is not unreasonable. The things troubled me were the high F(33) and W(134). I heard about that 400 potential Pre-med students entering into the college ended up with 150 applicants for medical school. And, 75 of the 150 students usually get accepted by , at least, one medical school. The students getting B or above totaled 134 from a total class of 432. This is not too far from the 150/400 ratio. It is reasonable to say that a student needs to get B+ or above for this course to keep pursuing Pre-med considering there might be other professors offering the same course.

I also found the course S-341 by Prof. Aron.

Total: 42 students enrolled. 28 students got B+ or above. The Honor students had an average GPA of 3.68 with a course GPA of 3.08 while the regular students had an average GPA of 3.2 with a course GPA of 2.4. From what I see, the honor class may not be any easier. The grade distribution may be similar (I do not believe that the section GPA was correct probably due to the F/W grade.). I am wondering if the tests for the two classes are the same though.
