The Communications and Culture major looked promising, but it doesn’t seem to put you on the right track for mass comm, public relations, advertising, etc. and you’re required to take a foreign language. is there a better major for mass comm at iu?

Other options are:

The Business department (Kelley school) offers the following two majors:
Business Communications; and
Marketing

The Telecommunications department offers the following three majors:
Media and Society
Design and Production (of Media messages)
Industry and Management (of Media outlets/advertising firms)

and probably closest to what you have in mind, the Journalism Department offers a journalism major that can be specifically tailored to either public relations or advertising. Here are a few of the courses you can choose from:
[Bachelor of Arts in Journalism Indiana University School of Journalism](http://journalism.indiana.edu/undergraduate/undergraduate-academics/ba-in-journalism/)

Note the ones in Public Relations Writing, Public Relations Campaigns, Advertising as Communication, Media Management and Public Relations Management.

The nice thing about IU-B is that you can take classes from all three areas and have them count in other majors.

For example, my son is in the business school–yet one of his business legal studies courses was “Communications Law”–a Journalism Course. He also took a course on Design and Production of Media (from the Telecommunications Department) as one of his optional courses during his freshman year.
