IU Kelley Petition Tracker 2025

That was my understanding that anyone who wants to apply for regular admission to Kelley can take the pre business courses during freshman year and attempt to get the grades and gain admission. I did not think students have to be accepted to “pre-business” to take the courses freshman year.

I would have this student talk with his advisor, and/or do this:

Current IU Students | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley

Are you sure the denial he received on May 14 wasn’t the denial of his direct admit petition (assuming he submitted that) and not a denial for ‘pre-business’?

This came from Kelley- we regret to inform you that your request to change to a Kelley major (as either direct admit or pre-business) has not been approved.

So I do not know what criteria was used to deny the student the opportunity to prove capability in the business school.

From what I understand, this cycle is the first EVER in which students are rejected from the pre-business track.

However, from the line in your reply that said “…your request to change to a Kelley major”. This means that the student’s initial application to IU, and their offically-listed major when they paid the deposit, was Economics (in the College of Arts and Sciences), not a Kelley major which is required to be in the pre-business track.

It is likely that their initial acceptance letter was drafted by the College of Arts & Sciences with its seal, instead of the Kelley School or University Division. It would also have been reflected in their online portal that they were not “pre-business” but rather, an economics major.

From everything that I’ve seen online, the regulations state that you need to apply to IU picking a business major, and be rejected for Direct Admission, in order to start out as Pre-Business. In the previous years, advisors could freely switch students’ majors any time before class starts as a sort of “loophole”, however Pre-business + Kelley DA has grown to more than 5000+ students out of 9000 incoming IU students, meaning almost 2/3rds!!! of an incoming IU class is looking to get into Kelley.

Perhaps that number ballooned again this year which required them to not only restrict admissions into the pre-business pathway, but also make a last minute switch to requiring all B+'s for secondary admission into Kelley

5000 is pretty intense. Do you know the breakdown between DA and pre-business?

DA class usually hovers around 2000

I know all Pre-Kelley students attend the same opening/orientation session on the first day of school, and its been said (anecdotally) that the numbers were in the high 2000s, or above 3000, varying between the previous 2 classes.

Last cycle, IU revised its admission into the University from a University general “pre” concept to admission to one of 12 colleges or “exploratory.” Someone might be admitted by the University pre-business or admitted to another major. I don’t know the circumstances of being denied 2 weeks after the deposit was due - there may be more to that story or maybe not. It was never the case someone with good grades could be a pre-business major - it was that anyone could regardless of grades - the good grades was a question for the standard admission to Kelley.

This change was not a Kelley change - it was PT 1 of a major restructure of the University, Pt 2 is happening now with the shutting down of programs and restructuring certain departments into certain schools with exploratory being the “undecided” category.
