IU, UGA, or In-State College?

IU Kelley has more known “prestige” than UGA and UA. But keep in mind that the prestige is also tied to what Kelley is really is known for first, investment banking. Having said that, UGA is overall the highest “ranked” University and the harder admit. IU Kelly is a very large business school. By the end of the day, only you can answer this question since everyone here gave you very good answers.

There are three things in play. Academics, Sports, and Texas. UGA probably gives you the overall edge once you put all of them together. However, IU had a pretty competitive team this past year and BIG TEN football is pretty awesome. I got one admitted to IU and UGA, he had no interest in IU for the sole reason that he decided to switch out of business, IU was not as well known for other majors. As it is, he is torn between UGA and UF and he wants to study business as well.

Because you are a direct admit to Kelley at IU, Indiana is the clear choice.

So how much is the price difference they are pushing you to take on (in debt?)?

IU is not known for investment banking. lol It, like UGA, has a workshop to help those interested in investment banking break in. And it’s extremely competitive to get into that workshop.

Athens has more to do than Bloomington and is considered to be one of the best college towns in the country.

But it sounds like we need to back up. Neither UGA nor IU is worth significant debt. What is your 50%? How much debt would you have to take on?

Price is very personal to an individual family’s situation and includes many more items in addition to tuition. That is between you and your parents.

A comment on sports: Both are in great conferences and are all-around sports schools.
Within the two big sports, UGA will probably get better in basketball and IU is on the rise in football. However, IU is definitely a basketball school. Ask any announcer, IU’s Assembly Hall is a Top 5 venue to witness a college basketball game. UGA is definitely a football school.

@ucbalumnus @itsgettingreal21 I think parents have enough money to pay for it, if we do need to take out a loan it would be around $15k. The idea is for them to pay for it but I help my getting a job in college and pay for some of it and also pay them back after college.

Doesn’t Bloomington also have a good college town with lots to do or am I wrong?

@Publisher Just out of curiosity how hard is it to get Direct Admit to Kelley? I know IU admissions rate is 76% while UGA is 51%

Bloomington is a fantastic, quintessential college town and the area is beautiful. The largest lake in Indiana (aside from Lake Michigan if you want to include that) is 15 minutes from campus. Southern Indiana is all forested rolling hills like Kentucky, not flat cornfields like northern Indiana. Little 500 (look it up) is the biggest college weekend in the Big Ten. Athens is a wonderful college town too, but it isn’t better.

I prefer the IU campus to UGA’s though. The historic north campus of UGA is nice, but it is small relative to the rest of UGA.

@bloomfield88 would you say the weather in Indiana is the similar to that of Alabama or Georgia?

No, southern Indiana gets all four seasons equal in length. Winters will be cold and a little snow. Autumn is awesome.

Bloomington will be cold & gray from Nov - April. Athens has pretty much perfect weather - 4 seasons but mostly sunny & warm 9 months ago. I did MS at UGA, Indiana native & still here except for 2 years in Athens. Counting the years until I can leave again - it was 2 years until coronavirus hit!

Also, IU football is NOTHING like UGA. Yes, the Big Ten has great teams but they are Michigan, Ohio State & Wisconsin.

Athens also has easy access to Atlanta.

@AllenLi17 : Re: post #26 above.

Direct admission acceptance rate last year to IU-Kelley was 45%. Average ACT score of 31; average SAT score was about 1434.

If you are sure that you want to study business, then direct admission to a very well respected business school is of significant value.

Here are the stats from Best Places.com:

Comfort Index 7.1 Bloom, 7.6 Athens
Rainfall 47" Bloom, 48"Athens
Precipitation Days 117 Bloom, 109 Athens
Sunny Days 191 Bloom, 218 Athens
UV Index 4 Bloom, 5 Athens
January Avg. Low 20F Bloom, 32F Athens

To the contrary, no one is saying IU football compares to UGA football.

$15k per year or for four years?

Also, IU football is NOTHING like UGA. Yes, the Big Ten has great teams but they are Michigan, Ohio State & Wisconsin.

Athens also has easy access to Atlanta.

Michigan football sucks!!! Sorry I had to get that in there. LOL!!! All Kidding aside.

Business IU Kelley>UGA>UA
College Towns Bloomington=Athens=Tuscaloosa
Weather UGA>IU>UA
Football UGA=UA>IU
Overall Sports UGA=UA=IU
The difficulty of admissions UGA>IU>UA
Cost ???
OOS Students UA>IU>UGA

It seems that UGA has the overall advantage. None of these schools are worth a huge premium over each other. The Direct admit to Kelley is nice, but I would not stir away from UGA or UA. Neither one of these schools has a difficult requirement for the upper-level track. It is very unfortunate that you are not able to visit. You just have to decide if Football is the deciding factor. I can’t imagine it will come to that. Who even knows if we are going to have a football season come fall.

Important to be a direct admit to business school in order to get a head start on internships.

@ucbalumnus 4 years total

@Boomer1964 I love each school all in diff ways but I might just have to flip a coin to decide it at this point.

@Publisher what are the perks of being a direct admit? I just thought you got admitted to Kelley school and you are guaranteed a spot in the Business school after freshman year.

Focus on business school clubs & on prepping for internships. Associating with others in the business schools.
