I've been accepted... and deferred.

I’ve been accepted into the University of Hawaii at Hilo. I’ve been deferred from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Greensboro, and Clemson University. I’m going to a community college right now to get an associates degree in humanities and social sciences. My grades are rather scattered because I’ve battled epilepsy throughout college. I had to drop out because of it, take a hiatus until my neurologist prescribed an effective medication and then reapply to the local community college.

Clemson, UNC Charlotte, and UNC Greensboro want to make sure that my spring grades are as consistent as my fall grades B+ and A-'s. I made the mistake of biting off more than I could chew. With my little sister already away at college I felt like a failure the more I looked at myself. So I decided to pack all the credits I needed into one semester. I’m taking seven classes at once. Monday, Wednesday and Friday I’m taking classes for twelve hours. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday I work thirty five hours. Because of this it’s likely that I’ll get B- and C+'s and I won’t be accepted. My parents want me to go to the schools I’ve been deferred from. They’re acting like I’ve been accepted not deferred.

I want to go to UH Hilo to dual major in Political Science and Hawaiian History. I feel trapped.

Your parents can want that, but if you are not accepted, you can’t go. Seems like you should deposit where you are accepted. If you get in at one of the others, give up the deposit and attend there instead.

I imagine your parents would prefer that you stay close to home because of your health problems. I can’t even imagine how hard/expensive it would be for one of them to fly to HI at the last minute if you get sick. I’m not sure what you can do if you don’t get accepted to the NC’s.

I would call UNC Greensboro and UNC Charlotte and find out if you attend a summer session and get good grades if you can gain admission. Be sure and pick classes you will ace.

Are you a NC or SC resident? That could be a reason for your parents to not want you heading off to HI for college - especially given that you have a health condition.

Stop measuring yourself by what your younger sister is doing. Measure yourself by your own self instead.

You need to cut back your work hours and/or your classes. Sit down with your advisor, and figure out which classes you could drop and then take during the summer, and talk with your parents about dropping some of your paid work.

I would need to drop two classes to not have to pay out of pocket during summer. Also doesn’t dropping classes look bad on my transcript? Especially when the Universities I’m deferred from already know about these classes.

While I’m actually from NY I was ‘encouraged’ to apply to NC, SC, VA, and FL because “The family seems to be moving south.” My brother is all but dissertation for his Doctorate in Criminology. He’s gotten offers from several Florida universities and I’ve been encouraged to apply to them. The acceptance rates of the colleges has been called upon are so abysmal I’d be denied outright.

Defiantly call UNCG and UNCC. Both schools are usually willing to work with transfer students. If for some reason you can’t get into UNCG or UNCC there are other nice schools you can probably still apply to such as Western Carolina, ECU, or maybe even NC A&T. I really hope to see you next year at UNCG.

My application for Eastern Carolina University was denied. Western Carolina seems like too much of a reach. I’ll try reaching out to the schools and applying to NC AC&T

Don’t let Western’s acceptance rate fool you. Western isn’t too hard to get into. You should still send in an application. It won’t hurt (except for paying for the application).
