I have been accepted into Northeastern U Boston Campus for civil engineering through Early Action. I looked through any possible pre-requisites and saw that all applicants must have take chemistry, precalc, and physics. I took precalc, base and AP chem yet no physics. Can they rescind me if they see on my final transcript that I have no physics? There is no mention of a physics requirement in my letter or enrollment terms and conditions. There is contrasting info saying that NEU accepts based off of holistic view and no set requirements but the engineering website says otherwise. First post here, nervous about possibly losing acceptance.
Didn’t you share your Senior classes in your app? If they are what you stated, there’s no issue.
I don’t see the requirement you say. If it’s required, you’ll take it this summer or there.
Unless you provided false info, I wouldn’t worry a single iota.
I was only able to add the courses I was taking the first semester of this year which none were physics related. I added my current courses a few weeks ago once I was scheduled through the college. Do they “assume” I am taking a physics course or did they just not make it a big deal in my application? Apologies for stupid questions, I am just very nervous of anything happening.
I should mention I am in dual enrollment so I don’t know my second semester courses right away.
Where are you seeing the pre reqs?
If you really want to, ask the school. Send a note to your AO but make sure you have another place to go.
Are you sure you didn’t enter the full year courses?
I’m guessing it’s much ado about nothing but if it calms your nerves, reach out. Better to know vs find out in June. Worst case maybe you need to take this summer.
On the NEU engineering website it says that applicants must have take precalc, chem, and physics. However on the generic NEU website it says the same thing but in a box underneath it mentions ”That being said, the Admissions Committee evaluates the student within the context of their school and what their school offers — this means that if a school has different graduation requirements, it’s fine if the number of courses does not match the recommended courses above.” I just checked and it was only my first semester courses. I will try to send an anonymous email first to see if i get an answer, thanks.
It would help others help you if you had posted a link to the web page that says that, which is here: https://coe.northeastern.edu/academics-experiential-learning/undergraduate-studies/undergraduate-admission-aid/
yes, sorry
Here is the contradicting one from generic undergrad website.
If you were truthful, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
Congratulations. Have you decided to attend NEU?
Admissions won’t assume that you took physics, so if it wasn’t listed on your transcript or 12th year courses whoever reviewed your app knew you did not take physics.
I would encourage you to let this go, why bring it up to them? I will note though that engineering is a tough major and not having had physics will definitely require some hard work on your part to get up to speed. You might do some supplementary physics study this summer.
I doubt that Northeastern would rescind their offer. But I would suggest that you take intro Physics your first semester or take it this summer at a local community college. The credits may not transfer but you would be better prepared for your engineering classes.
Thanks for the responses everybody, makes me feel a lot better. I’ll make to sure to catch up a bit through the summer.
Dont worry. NEU will offer physics classes and you will take it there. They didn’t make a mistake.
Thanks and I have decided, I just put down my enrollment deposit so I’ll let go of these worries.
Totally agree with others, as long as you didn’t lie on your application, you are fine!
But note that college physics courses for engineering and physics majors may assume a high school level knowledge of physics, so they may be more difficult without having taken high school physics.
That is a very fair point, though some “HS physics” is pretty darn rudimentary IM (personal)E…There will be kids in that intro class that will have everything from no physics to having completed AP Physics C (but no test score or “just” a 3) probably…I feel for the profs trying to deal with that, truth be told.
All I can do right now is use my performance with AP chem math as a coping mechanism lol.
Choose a light 2nd semester DE schedule. If you can’t take Introductory physics (alongside 3 other courses), use Khan Academy and complete the HS Physics unit or the AP Physics 1 unit, pacing yourself by dividing the total into 4 months then register for a summer class in Physics at the CC (taken P/F, the goal is just for you to be familiar with basic material your professor will assume you had in HS; most CCs are likely to offer one since it’s a class many fail and would need to repeat).
If your nearby CC doesn’t offer a Physics class over the summer, DO NOT start with General Physics for Engineers at NEU because that class will be filled with students who have taken AP Physics - it’d be like taking Russian 2 with people who have had 3 years of Russian before and you zero. I know people say “ HS Physics teaches very little” but the course teaches approaches, habits of the mind, and basic content that have become so automatic people with a Physics background forget they ever had to acquire the content&skills from that course. While you can probably learn that over a six week summer course, that step shouldn’t be skipped.
