This semester has been rough, and my classes haven’t even been that difficult. I retook physics 1 this semester (without calculas) and got a C+, i took it this past summer and got a C. This looks awful. I know medical school is not an option now so I am changing to pre pharmacy…which i know isn’t easy either. I am taking celexa for anxiety and i also take ativan as needed. I’m wondering if my celexa has stopped working. Usually the fear of doing bad on exams drives me study a lot and normally i get good grades, but for some reason this semester I don’t have that fear anymore, and now i’m doing bad. What should I do. And every time i start to do an assignment or study I start yawning and get really tired and can’t focus. I don’t know whats going on, but I need to change something. I eat healthy. And for the most part i get a decent amount of sleep, and I don’t drink alcohol. My diligent mentality is just gone. What should I do?

This battle is between you and yourself.

When some people lose their bad grade virginity they just drop all their standards. Don’t do that! You just have to totally punish yourself, but it all depends on you. If your heart isn’t in it, nobody but you can change that.

I usually slack off around 2/3rds the way through a semester. To keep myself on track, I have to do all kinds of things to find motivation. Usually I just wind up having a day in class where I have no idea what’s going on and that sounds the alarm.

I wish there was an easy answer to this. I don’t think you should approach medication for anxiety as the answer to your work ethic problem, though.

I would strongly suggest you talk about these issues with whoever is prescribing you these medications. If you’ve gone from being a strong student to a C student overnight, then maybe you need to switch things up.
I wouldn’t totally give up on the medical career. If you have a really strong turnaround and a great mcat, you might be able to sneak into your state school even with the Cs, but I have to really emphasize the turnaround part. You can write about emotional challenges you faced in teh semester and etc to try to explain it in your personal statement. Don’t be so quick to abandon your dreams!

Med school is certainly still an option. I got a C in orgo 1 and managed to “sneak” my way into a top 20 MD/PhD program.

^I wana be brown. where do you go to school? And note that I now have 3 c’s on my record and a w. C in gen chem 2, c and c+ in physics 1. and withdrawed from some stupid philosophy class this semester cause i hated it. I got a B in orgo 1 and A- in orgo 2. I’m honestly thinking about just calling my doc tomorrow and making an appointment to see him. I take ativan mostly only on nights before tests to help me sleep, and propranolol before tests for test anxiety. But I have had no motivation this semester and i can never concentrate. I’m wondering if my doctor will put me on adderall.

Ativan is a benzodiazapine that is highly sedating and has a very long half life. If you are taking it late at night before a test the following morning you are very likely to have a fairly large amount of it still in your system during the exam and could certainly have a very negative effect on your performance.

Talk to professional.

Maybe you should consider a less stressful career if just test-taking gives you anxiety to the extent you require medication.
