i think i want to focus on my international experiences and multicultural background for my esssay. it might sounds cliche here, but i love to write and i think that a lot of those schools (esp Columbia–my top choice) would be receptive to something about diversity like that.

sooo any thoughts? esp if you’ve been accepted to any of those schools. thank you!!!

Yes, talking about your diversity would really help at the schools you’re applying to.
If you ED for Columbia, i would say your chances are pretty good, especially if you’re applying into some international relations program with a strong forensics background.

Your GPA is very strong, certainly can’t get any better there, and if you really think youc an get higher on the SATs, then really go for it.

I’ve known people that’ve carried the forensics stuff pretty far into the ivies, so i wouldn’t be surprised if you did that as well. Though they were hooked applicants (urms) so i think you might have a harder time getting into harvard, and princeton.

Your stats are definitely in the range for the rest of the IVYs and you have a very good chance at any of the schools you’ve listed other than harvard and princeton.

Good luck.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/954601-hypsm-hopeful-chances.html</a></p>

Generally, 750+ is more competitive for schools like Columbia, especially considering the lenient curve for Math II.

Cornell, GW, American, and Northwestern are all matches for you, though Cornell may be a slight reach. If you’re sure that Columbia’s your #1 choice, apply ED. It’ll give you a significant advantage.

would u of chicago also be considered a match, do you think? georgetown?

and yea, i know my subject test scores aren’t great…i was hoping the decent AP scores and rigorous course load would help balance things… :/

That’s a very excellent application and a near perfect SAT score.

Your Middle-Eastern statues will help you apply as a URM and with that you’re a strong contender for any college in America.

No, neither one can be considered matches except for the best students. In addition, your ethnicity will be considered ORM and not URM, which will actually put you at a disadvantage.

Chicago’s a low reach for you. Georgetown is high match/low reach.

^^^phuriku, i saw that you graduated from u of chicago?
what were your stats like, if you don’t mind me asking?

any other recommendations for schools, anyone? i know what my reaches are (columbia, brown, penn are probably my top choices) but i’m trying to find more matches/safeties. haha i think everyone wants to get into the ivies, but i also want a few that are very realistic because i feel like those might be overreaching for me.

31 ACT, 2250 SAT II (Math, Physics, Japanese), straight 5 APs by Junior year (Phys C Mech+EM, Calc BC, Stat), and a variety of upper-undergraduate math courses. What made my application more than anything was my teacher recommendations and my essays, though, which are top priority for Chicago. And mind you, this was back when the acceptance rate was 35% (although IMO, the arbitrariness of the process has risen significantly, while actual standards of admission have risen only slightly).

The reason I say that Chicago is not a match is because if we assume an application increase in line with past increases of the incoming dean of admissions, the acceptance rate will probably be 13-14% next year. I don’t think that any school that admits only 1 out of every 7 applicants can be considered a match for anyone but the most spectacular, especially a school that is known for admitting students based more on essays and recommendations (that portray the type of student Chicago is looking for) than on standard admissions criteria such as SATs (even though Chicago’s average SATs are only 5 points below MIT’s and above all Ivies except for HYP).

Even when Chicago had an acceptance rate in the high 30%s, many students with SATs of 2350+ and great GPAs were rejected, and now that the university is even more selective, I think it is impossible to call it a match for anyone but the most outstanding high school students.

Your application looks good, but there are maybe a few things holding you back. Since you got 4s on a lot of the AP exams, colleges will tend to think that you come from a not-so-competitive school. Second, there is a lack of leadership in your ECs. With no leadership positions whatsoever, a rejection is almost guaranteed from every Ivy.

Chance back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/953055-please-chance.html</a></p>

I think your ECs are fine and your class rank speaks for itself. SAT I is ok for top schools (if you could get it up to a 2300 that would be a real plus.) But I think the real issue with your application are those SAT IIs which will raise a red flag for the top schools. (A 710 in Math II is not good at the Ivy level.) Get those SAT IIs up and you’ll be in much better shape.

^^^davidoga, not trying to be argumentative…but i do have leadership in ec’s…
-president of forensics (my speech and debate team was first in the state)
-president of student ambassadors
-treasurer of french club
-lead freshmen mentor
-assistant martial arts instructor

and i was planning on retaking math II and lit actually after studying so i’m expecting them to both go up

and i was hoping that colleges would consider that i took 6 AP classes junior year and got all 4’s and 5’s whereas a lot of people just take 3 and get all 5’s. wouldn’t they have to consider the overall courseload? my school is actually pretty competitive…one of the top public in the state. will a few 4’s really hurt that much in the scheme of things, do you think?

any other apparent weaknesses anyone noticed?

Oh, I just meant that more leadership positions would help, especially ones geared toward your intended major. Also, the 4’s aren’t going to hurt that much, but it’s the Ivies we’re talking about here, so they won’t help you either. Good luck.

yea, i know what you mean…i want to major in an international affairs/communications field. i was hoping that my multicultural background and forensics experience would help there.
i was also hoping that colleges would notice that my social studies and language scores are always higher (near perfect)** when compared to my math/science ones…haha. we’ll see i guess.
and thank you everyone. good luck to all of you!

**well, except that literature score…i didn’t prep and wasn’t comfortable with the timing of the test. it’s no excuse for leaving 12+ blank, but my test room didn’t have a clock, so i freaked out!!! def retaking that one…WITH a WATCH!
