Ivy League or Respectable State University - Should I retake the SAT

I took the SAT for the second time and I received a 720 in Math and a 730 in Verbal and I was wondering if I should take it again if I want to get accepted into an Ivy League School or a respectable state university? My parents think I should re-take it, but does it look bad if you take it more than twice? If so, after how many times does it start to negatively affect my application?

I don’t think it would affect you a large amount, but colleges typically don’t recommend you take it more than a max of 3 times. It could be helpful to you to get those scores in the 750+ range, but is by no means necessary for admission to Ivies or a respectable state university, it could just give you a slight extra boost. Don’t retake it if you don’t feel confident/have a valid reason you feel you’d improve (extra prep, etc.). Good luck!

There hasn’t been a “Verbal” section in over a decade.

Have you tried the ACT?

It’s recommended that you take the SAT a maximum of 2-3 times, so one more attempt wouldn’t hurt your chances. Look at the schools you are interested in and look at their percentiles for test scores to really decide if you want to take it again. While high 700s might be more coveted, you should consider whether it is important for you to study and retake the SAT or get involved in your extracurriculars or work on writing really solid essays. Test scores aren’t everything, so your time might be best spent improving other parts of your application!
Especially because on the SAT, the difference between a 720 and 750+ is likely very few questions, so it really isn’t worth worrying about. Good luck!

Thanks for all of the responses… Yea im still torn. So schools CAN see how many times I take it? Im leaning towards taking it again. I find studying for the SAT pretty laid back and not too rigorous.

I haven’t tried the ACT yet, I was thinking of that too. I was just leaning toward retaking the SAT since Ive seen old tests before and have a good clue of where my studying level needs to be at before I take it again vs starting fresh on the ACT.

No, They can’t but some IVY’s and respectable schools require to send all scores and some of them superscore. If schools found out that you didn’t send them, you would be rejected. Be honest and do what schools say!

Sometimes schools report your SAT score on your transcripts.
If you see improvements on your practice tests, then a taking the test again won’t hurt. Good luck!

I think taking the SAT multiple times without trying the ACT is insane. Sorry. That’s how I feel.

Many kids do better on one or the other.

3 times are good. Taking the SAT more than 3 can be seen like anxiety or something alike since you don’t get your desired score.
