Does anyone know if being a Mississippi resident on your top tier applications is a URM or a hook of some type? The Ivies I have checked out seem to have 1-3 total students from this state
@skieurope I figure you may be the most knowledgeable for this question.
Well, it’s two different questions. A resident of Mississippi is not necessarily URM, although many are. URM is certainly a hook. Being a resident of Mississippi is not a “hook” per se, but some colleges may value the geographic diversity. However, for Ivy League colleges and others of that tier, they will not accept a student whose application is not otherwise strong simply because of where they live.
As a native Floridian residing in Ms. for the last 20+ years, I consider the Public School system inadequate. That being said, I consider a Son18, 3rd in class, 4.0/4.7, 34 ACT and a 1550 SAT and currently NMSF and NHRP as a strong application from most states. Ec’s and Essays remain to be seen. LOL… I also have a daughter 3rd in class, 4.0/4.7 and a 32 ACT who needs to find a University. I am hoping a possible Latino/ Mississippi URM helps out. LOL :))
Thanks for your input. :)>-
http://nmfscholarships.yolasite.com/ may be helpful for National Merit based scholarships. However, the list is somewhat older, so all scholarships should be checked on college web sites because they may have changed.
Probably makes the app a little more interesting than an identical one from a wealthy NJ suburb. But I don’t think it has a huge impact.
