Amazing how much the standards have moved the past few years. Used to be if a girl ran 2:12, they’d be looking pretty good. Now, notsomuch. 58-point in the intermediates? Good Lord.
My son thinks that during covid HS distance runners started watching what other HS runners were doing on strava, and it created a feedback loop. As a result HS training got ramped up much closer to college levels of training and HS times got faster.
I agree, the training has changed quite a bit in the last few years just based on what I’ve seen kids doing. I hadn’t made the Strava connection but that makes sense to me. What I saw in my area, too, was that kids had much longer periods of uninterrupted training than in the past when their year was carved up by long competitive seasons. It seemed to allow for more and better training and recovery. I think some coaches might’ve learned lessons from that, which they stuck with post-Covid.
