JAMA "Tracking US Health Care Spending by Health Condition and County"

The figures and tables show how health care spending varies by age, sex, type of care, payer category, county, and health condition.

This is a rather simplistic statement:

With enhanced insurance coverage, individuals are more likely to engage in regular health checkups and manage health conditions early, reducing the need for emergency care. This shift could lead to better health outcomes and a more efficient allocation of health care resources.

My S has found great difficulty in retaining a PCP due to his private HMO insurance and the area in which he lives. The insurance is good; the network is not. He doesn’t use the ER, but he does have to use urgent care rather than a PCP when he needs care. The lack of primary care doctors accepting new patients in many areas is a contributing factor that doesn’t get the attention it should.

DIL and H and I have been urging S to go and have a physical and get a regular MD. he’s been ignoring all of us. He pays and has decent medical insurance and I told him he deserves to find out if there are any conditions that should be addressed. DIL is diligent about her healthcare but so far none of us have had much success with getting S to an MD. I guess he saw too many who didn’t help him from and through age 18.
