James Madison University Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

JMU does not admit by major.

So how do they decide departmental merit? If they don’t admit by major? My daughter may change went she went in under, which seems like no big deal but I don’t want that effecting her chances of merit.

I’m not certain that merit is tied to any department during the admissions process.

Question. Is anyone else applying for the school of music? And have you heard back yet? I’m applying for the SOM on flute and I’m getting worried.

While its not by major, they do admit by department. I dont believe merit is tied to either unless you applied for a specific scholarship and I dont remember seeing anhthing specific except for teaching and journalism. My brother went to JMU and got no merit, I dont recall them offering much of anything really. Could be different now. I went to VT and had so much merit, my college was paid for. I remember my mom calling the Financial Aid office at the time and they told her, they just dont offer much. Granted this was like 12 years ago. But Im not anticipating much merit if anything for my son based on what I’ve seen over the years.

My daughter’s portal changed to Accepted for the CVPA on the portal at the same time as she got JMU acceptance. However, I did read somewhere that some notifications dont occur until all auditions are complete. Im thinking it might depend on the professor that did the audition, but not certain. It also says she will hear more directly from the SOM, but she hasn’t yet.

My girl just got Honors at Virginia Tech. I think she is going to go there. Still wondering what finances are going to look like so holding out for April

Can any Virginia people comment on the word in their schools for early action outcomes? Tougher than expected?

I ask b/c JMU has traditionally accepted 78% of applicants so I didn’t expect a lot of drama.

At our school it was genuinely shocking how many kids were deferred and denied.

We were accepted but did hear a lot more deferrals than expected in our nova school which is a top public high school in the state

My DD and several of her friends were accepted, but know many deferred. Our consultant says they were considerably more selective this year. I guess we’ll see final numbers soon.

Just FYI for anyone waiting on merit aid, we got an email last night saying it would be emailed by 3/1 if you received any non need based merit aid. Here’s hoping!
Also on another note…we are OOS but my IS niece was denied and it was shocking. A very involved kid with a high GPA who had talked to an admissions counselor on multiple occasions. It was very surprising.

We did not receive that email. OOS, so did not expect any.

Don’t you have to fill out a General Scholarship application in MyMadison to be considered?

A lot of deferrals. Some only applied to JMU and had to scramble to find a backup to apply to in case they don’t get in RD.

We were also shocked by the amount of deferrals. My daughter’s friend was deferred from JMU, but accepted at VA Tech…which was the first time I’ve heard of that. We are in state.

We are OOS as well…but the email came with a host of other information regarding delays in financial aid because of FAFSA delays. In it was a paragraph on merit aid and it being decided and us being alerted if we received any by the end of this month. I don’t have high hopes but it would make my daughter’s decision a bit easier if we got something.

We got the email too - I appreciate that they are going to let us know about merit by the end of February. We can only attend if she gets some money so I didn’t want to attend CHOICES without know the bottom line. We’ve been very pleased with the communication from JMU. My daughter even got a post card in the mail yesterday congratulating her on Honors College.
