James Madison University Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

Hi everyone. My S24 was accepted and we’re planning to attend one of the Choices days, but I have a question about the registration form. Is anyone familiar with the event? Do potential students get grouped together by major and only learn more about the major they chose when they register? Or will they have the opportunity to visit all departments to speak with professors? S24 isn’t sure which major makes the most sense for the career path he wants to pursue, and may choose an interdisciplinary major. It probably doesn’t really matter how he registers, but I’m just curious about what to expect.

My daughter got into Honors today but no mention of any merit (yet). We wouldn’t pay full price so knowing if she got $ or not is a huge missing piece of the puzzle. She filled out that Madison scholarship application by the deadline so hoping we don’t have to wait until March/April. I read some people last year got free room/board for 2 years - not sure if they found out about that earlier or closer to March/April.

Congrats! My DD just found out her Honors application was differed. Financial aid should be able to answer your timeline questions. I have heard that JMU really only gives merit to about 3% of the students

Differed here too and got Honors at all the other schools she applied to. I is okay though, she wanted honors just for the free printing lol. There are still tons of ways to save money at JMU like renting your textbooks from the library too.

DD also deferred from Honors. I don’t think it’s a huge deal but could make a difference as other Honors offers roll in.

They are not grouped during Choices. You attend things that interest you. For example, my son is a business major so he toured the business building. You start at the Atlantic Bank Center for a big presentation and then pick and choose where you want to go from there. They have tours of Housing as well as UREC. This was what I remember from the 2022 year. Things may have changed last year.

Are you able to/Is there enough time to tour more than one Department or School? DS applied with the intention of Business but now may also be interested in CS.

Accepted!! OOS, 3.4 GPA Weighted, 4 AP’s, 200+ Hours Community Service, Communications major, lots of extracurriculars

So S24 was admitted on Tuesday, and then today was Deferred from Honors (we think?), but did not get an email. Only found out because looked in the portal and Honors and been changed to Regular Decision-decision pending). Which seems like pretty poor communication…probably could have done that a little better…

I got in!!! OOS and I got Honors too, I had pretty solid extracurriculars and rec letters, 3.92 UW and 4.4 weighted, 1300 SAT. I’m rather excited, although I’m really hoping to get a sholarship or some merit, some extra money would be phenomenal for us, and would make the decision a lot easier

That’s interesting. Under the Honors portion of my daughter’s portal, it says “Deferred” and when you click on it there’s a message that says that they’ll provide a final decision by “late March”.

Where do you see the honors portion in the applicant portal? I don’t see anything but did apply to honors college.

This is what my daughter’s portal page looks like. The Honors portion is at the bottom. Below where it says “Decision” in the black bar, it says “Deferred” in purple. (I didn’t include the “Deferred” part because to the left of it is her applicant number and I want of course to keep that confidential.)

Ours still says Pending. We used to be in Early action. But now we are in Regular decision. But no email and no letter explaining…

DS accepted Honors college, 3.85uw/1460 SAT. I think merit/aid info comes out later.

I know merit comes out later and is rare at JMU but does anyone know if your chances are better of getting merit if you were accepted into honors college? It would make my daughters decision a lot easier if we got some merit as we are OOS.

Wondering that too (my daughter got into Honors and we are OOS and can’t pay full price). We aren’t sure about attending the March 2nd Choices date if merit hasn’t been announced by that date. The April dates aren’t ideal because of other schools also having their accepted student days.

Neither my son nor his GF did honors college. My son was a madison scholar. I’m not sure what his GF got. It was not super large, but every bit helps!

Last week of March, the dept head sent my son an email asking if he was still interested in JMU and would accept the scholarship. My son is a great kid, but not a superstar like you see on CC. Honestly, I think what helped him was in the fall, I took him to meet with the Dean, because he had a lot of questions about the IA program. And afterwards they had a senior take him around while I sat in the common area. But (mom brag) he did graduated at the top of his class in his major, so maybe they did know what they were going lol. He really loved JMU, which means this mom does too.

I did not know that, thanks for the info!
