James Madison University Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

I saw on the schedule that check-in for Choices is at 8 AM… so we will be traveling the day before.

It will be interesting to see what happens as JMU’s acceptance rate drops. This year it may come in at under 70% for the first time.

My daughter checked the portal and it just said “Admitted”. She didn’t get a “congrats” or an email or letter - is that what others experienced? Kind of anti-climatic but happy nonetheless.

Congratulations! If you scroll down a bit you should be able to click on the letter.

Daughter admitted. I honestly was expecting a deferral.

She is suuuuuper happy–already deposited! JMU here she comes!

Decision: Deferred :frowning:

I was kinda expecting to get deferred since my GPA is low, but seeing so many people at my school getting accepted with much lower stats, I am confused about what I did wrong in my application. Anyone have some input?

You likely didn’t do anything wrong. Could be the enroll algorithm. You’ll likely get in RD.

Some of this is really random and there are a ton of kids from NoVa applying. It’s nothing you did wrong, all of your stats/extra curriculars look great. As a Duke mom, my best advice would be to follow up with your admissions rep and ask if there is anything that you can submit besides midyear grades (most schools will send those automatically). Keep in touch with the rep every couple of weeks and let them know that JMU is you number one, as long as it’s true. You still have a great chance of getting in!

They were probably looking carefully at math and science grades because you wanted engineering. How were your grades in those specific subjects? How was your SAT math score in relation to language?

My average in math and science was a B. I took AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Calculus AB last year and had a B in both, and got a 4 on the mechanics exam and a 5 on the calc ab exam. My math SAT score was a 750 while my english score was a 680. Also, JMU was not my top choice, but it would have been good to have another instate option to compare with others.

Engineering program admissions are so challenging. JMU was the only school my DC applied to that laid out so carefully the coursework they expected for all applicants. In fact, our internation school uses these JMU guidelines to help US students choose classes with US college admissions in mind. As the other poster said, those math and science grades may have been the main focus of your review and your impressive extracurriculars may not even have factored into the decision. It is clear you will land in a great place and make the most of your college experience.

I’m confused. JMU’s engineering website says “admissions is to the university, not the program. If you get accepted to JMU, you can declare Engineering as your major.”

Do you have a link to the coursework expected for all applicants?

Honors college letters have come out via email! Daughter got in!!!

Deferred from honors college too. Surprisingly after looking at some other peoples stats, they seem to have been deferred too despite 4.0 UW.

Anyone know when merit/scholarship info will come out? Is merit offered for the honors college acceptance?

JMU has a scholarship Hub that has a list of scholarships that you can apply for. There is not a ton of merit at this school. It looks like it’s likely to be March / April because the site says that you are notified along with your financial aid. Pretty sure that the FAFSA mess is not going to help.
