Accepted OOS. 3.96/4.6. 1400 SAT. 10 APs (5 5s and 1 3 so far). Great ECs, lots of community service.
My son has similar stats and isnāt home but I imagine will have a similar result. Nova is hard. I heard lots of kids got into Tech this year but deferred from JMU. They seem to go by rigor and grades exclusively for NoVa kids. Out of curiosity was this a deferral from EA and if so did your daughter write a letter of continued interest?
She was deferred Early Action and then wrote a letter of continued interest to the NOVA school rep who said he would advocate for her.
I think my son got that same form letter.
For anyone that has received a merit award, please share your childās stats. Kind of surprised my son did not receive anything.
Thank you

Accepted to Honors Program
I may have misunderstood but it said in the acceptance letter that any scholarships offered would appear in their portal sometime in mid April. I took that to mean that no merit scholarships have been given out yet.
My son who was accepted early action and is very high stats was offered one of the Madison awards for excellence. It came a couple of weeks after he was accepted. Madison doesnāt seem to offer much merit based on the Common Data Set stats.
We have seen the same in terms of stats regarding merit based. From looking online it looks as though any RD merit offers come some time at the end of March/early April. Although my son has high stats, we are not expecting much considering the low amounts that have been awarded in the past. Do you mind if I ask what your son received in terms of dollar amount?
Itās 75% of in-state tuition, so itās about $10,200 this year (assuming that the 24-25 rates donāt go up too much). Madison Award for Academic Excellence - JMU
I appreciate you clarifying. That is how I read it be as well but I just wanted to verify, so in the event that any merit aid does come, I would know what to roughly expect. My son received a full OOS tuition waiver from FSU, and I think it kind of spoiled us in terms of what he could possibly expect from other OOS universities. This is our first go around with having a senior and it has been a huge learning experience.
Glad that I could help. We are in-state, so it makes it a very compelling offer. Best of luck with your sonās decisions!
That is fantastic for in state!! So happy for you!
The individual who responded to my e-mail in admissions said recipients have already been notified.
Interesting enough re: merit aid, my high stats OOS daughter received nothing despite being offered honors college and we were very disappointed BUTā¦of the 7 schools she applied to 5 including JMU all landed within $1k-$2k of each other. All the others started high and brought the price down through merit aid. JMU started lower and remained there. The only two exceptions to this were PSU that started high and remained high because merit is impossible to get there and URI who gave enough merit to drop into the upper $30k range. It did make me feel a bit better noticing this but on the other hand all her hard work in highschool would have been nice to be recognized with merit.
I know the lack of merit offered to OOS students can be frustrating, but your quoted sentence above goes a long way towards explaining the reality of JMUās model. The school is working hard to generate the funds necessary to expand their merit/scholarships, but that will take some time. Currently the full tuition is reasonable enough to be competitive with more expensive schools that reduce their inflated tuition with merit.
Exactly my point but you said it better! Haha! I think the problem is really just feeling better that you got something. Like when the stores increase the price and then give you an 20% off coupon. Proven sales tactic that makes you feel good you got a discount. Sheās headed to JMU next year, and hopefully some scholarship money will appear as the years pass. Itās the right place for her and Iām happy to be sending her someplace she loves!
How do we know if we received merit? Would it be in the portal???
My daughter got her merit via email a couple of weeks after her acceptance. We are OOS and she got the Madison Excellence (75% of in-state which is $10.200 for the current year).

Son got the second century STEM scholarship (full tuition) with 4.4 weighted, 1490 SAT, 5 AP courses, a few honors, and some STEM-relevant ECs.
VT engineering was 1st choice but he was waitlisted, I guess applying there from Nova is basically like applying to an Ivy League at this point!
Headed to Choices this weekend. Looking like heās gonna be a Duke unless GMU really surprises us w/ merit award!
