My son’s credentials were not nearly as good as your daughter’s. Sorry for her.
My son was admitted, we are OOS. 3.5UW, 4 APs/1 Honors, varsity sports, volunteerism 100+hrs/yr, Eagle Scout, p/t job.
Are you in state? We are in VA and got waitlisted too. My daughter is saying so far all of the friends she asked got waitlisted.
We are in state AND from northern VA. So that is against us as well. And she has had to work really hard to get what she has, being from this area is not easy.
My daughter was admitted, we are OOS. 3.7UW 3 APs/2Honors, varsity sports, volunteer, p/t job. Nothing about scholarship yet
Sorry about your daughter’s news. She will get in off the waitlist IMO. I believe the NoVA location had everything to do with the odd result rather than not being a 1st Gen (hope you aren’t blaming yourself!) - in fact I think JMU’s historic OOS interest contributed. Similar phenomenon in NC at NC State and Chapel Hill for kids who are Raleigh and Charlotte. Their bar is very high compared to other parts of the state and you see similar cases. Best of luck to your smart child.
We are OOS. No AP’s or Honors Surprised he wasn’t denied outright in EA. LOL
Agree completely…we are NOVA as well.
Thank you RitaRivas - I really appreciate your kind words:) I do wish I had an ounce of your optimism. It does not seem very hopeful as it looks like they waitlisted >6K. She does have alternatives, but it wasn’t where she wanted to go.
My son was waitlisted as well. We’re from NoVa. Time to pick somewhere else to put a deposit!
Where did you see they waitlisted that many kids?
Ah -figured it out from the website info -nvm!
It was in the FAQs on their site: https://www.jmu.edu/admissions/apply/waitlist-faq.shtml#fyr-waitlist under 'Why Am I on the Waitlist?":
“This year over 36,966 students applied for admission to James Madison University. Approximately 17% of applicants were offered a place on the waitlist.”
And
“The JMU Admissions Committee takes a comprehensive approach when reviewing applications. This year the committee determined that 90% of applicants would do well in college; unfortunately, the committee could only extend offers of admission to 73% of the applicant pool. Applicants offered a position on the waitlist have strong credentials that placed them among the best of those not offered admission.”
To be honest, I am not sure i understand the 2nd numbers- they state that 90% of the applicants were good, but could only accept 76% of them? (that is over 26K students, which makes no sense since the waitlist letter said there were only 4750 accepted in the freshman class) - so I am clearly reading that wrong)
Colleges overaccept in order to fill their classes since they don’t know how many will accept.
I wonder if that is still last year’s figures. This year they said they had over 40,000 applications.
The letter in his portal says 39, 705 applied. So yeah, that may be last year’s numbers.
I heard that too - I guess they got more specific in the actual waitlist letter, so I think it is this year. This is what the letter said “This year, James Madison University received 39,705 applications for a freshman class of 4,750.”
So what are everyone’s second choices? We’re looking at Michigan State I think.
Not sure. JMU was not his first choice because he doesn’t have one. SMH Also considering Indiana, Sacred Heart, URI, Salisbury, Seton Hall and Coastal. All over the map - literally and figuratively. He got into Tampa for the Spring - may also consider that.
My son was accepted. Slightly surprising given other stats on here are higher. 3.5GPA 1270, multiple varsity sports, AP/Honors, and good EXCs. His sister currently attends JMU. That may have had something to do with it but who knows? Now I have to figure out how to do Choices when we are scheduled for MSU Green & White Day 4/6. The 4/12 choices date is kind of late since we know JMU housing preference is based on deposit date. Happy he got in but understand the frustration of others who did not. He was rejected from PSU, PITT, and UCONN while others w/ lower stats got in. Crazy year. Good luck!
