Jan Berenstain (of Berenstain Bears) has passed away

I came across this sad news today. Apparently she had a stroke on Thursday, age 88. [Berenstain Bears co-creator Jan Berenstain dies](http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2012/02/27/national/a081917S35.DTL&tsp=1)

I have very fond memories of reading BB books to my kids. They clicked with the kids because we’re a family of a mama, a papa, a brother, and sister “bear.” ;)

May the original Mama Bear rest in peace. :(

My S was fond of those books as a little kid. Sad news.

We loved those books, too, and also related to them as a family. RIP, Mama Bear!

Awwwww. We have family “sayings” that came from those books, 25 years later. I am saving a well-worn complete set for my daughter in a box in the basement.

My 28 yr old son tweeted this today. He collected those books until he was in high school. Maybe all the way through. I still have them in his old room and plan on returning them to him when his wife gives birth. I will complete the collection first.

S2 liked the books too. He’d get them through book sales at school. I’m sure I’d find some in his room, if I could find anything in his room.

Oh, that makes me so sad. We have so many of those books. I’ll break the news to the kids and dh now …

We used the Berenstain Bears books to solve kid problems…had a kid who had the “gimmees” bad whenever we went to the store. We read the book together, agreed to implement their solution and everyone was happy.

I loved the one where they went on the vacation from Hades!

My S adored the BBears. Kept his collection in his room till way into high school and then very carefully packed them away in a safe spot in the attic.

We still have a few hard bound BB books. Our kids loved them!

Name your favorite . How about BB and Too Much Junk Food with Coco Chums cereal???

Berenstain Bears and the New Neighbors - when the Panda bears moved in across the street and Papa Bear was upset at first because they were “different” - good lesson in diversity.

I could go on and on!

Ds1 called me immediately upon receiving my e-mail.

I guess our favorite was about the gimmes. Gosh, they’ve been packed away a long time. I’d need to pull them out to remember them all.

I guess we’ll give that collection to ds1 and Dr. Seuss to ds2. He was just talking about Green Eggs and Ham being the first book he read …

Too much junk food! A classic (and another one used to teach a lesson). The one dealing with telling lies came in handy at our house…

Oh my goodness, so sad! We had all of the books (literally I had made a copy of all the titles that I kept in my purse and looked in all bookstores till we had them all.) And I have pics of my girls with the BB family at Hersheypark. And we had the set of 4 stuffed Berenstain Bears…

^^ I had a list in my purse too. :)

We have pics of my first two at Cedar Point from when they had the Berenstain Bear kids area.

We still have some of the VHS tapes we had of the BB stories - they got watched A LOT!

S1 was a reader and S2 was a watcher so we had the books and the movies too.
I didn’t save any of them though.

MANY hours spent in my home reading the BBs!

So many great ones. Hard to choose a favorite. The BBears were a nightly ritual in our house. Thanks for posting the link.

In my house, DS1 would get the Dr. Seuss books and DS2 would get the BB books. I remember the junk food one (DS2 is still a junk food junkie so I’m not sure the lesson took).

D is very dyslexic and didn’t learn to read decently until 6th grade. She is so sad to learn this news (age 15 now). She loved those books so much. She felt she missed a lot due to being unable to read when she was younger, so she kept reading these books during jr. high. Because she wasn’t in love with reading, we didn’t keep lots of her children’s books, but we have this whole set!
