Japan to Raise Alert Level of Nuclear Crisis to Level 7

Japan to Raise Alert Level of Nuclear Crisis, Reports Say

TOKYO (AP) — News reports say Japan has decided to raise the severity level of the crisis at its tsunami-stricken nuclear power plant to 7 — the highest level and equal to the 1986 disaster at Chernobyl in the former Soviet Union.

Quoting sources at Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, Kyodo News agency and public broadcaster NHK both said Tuesday that NISA would raise the severity level of the nuclear radiation disaster at the ***ushima Dai-ichi plant to 7 from the current 5.

The news out of Japan just keeps getting worse and worse…

It’s very sad and bad situation.

But, more people die each year from many other causes than nuclear, and it’s important to keep that in perspective. Examples include:

Firearms

Airplanes

Car accidents

Coal mines

Oil industry

More fish were harmed by hydroelectric projects than ever will from nuclear power

More birds are killed by windmills than will be from nuclear power

We humans as a species have a negative impact on the environment. It’s important that we consider how we can minimize that impact, and consider all the effects and not just the ones that make dramatic news headlines.

(As you can tell, I’m still a fan of nuclear power but only if we can better institute more robust safeguards and protections)

Takes a brave and modest company/person to admit that they don’t know everything.

TEPCO, thought they did.
