jas0n's Official UCI Q&A Thread

wow this thread has been ongoing for more than a year, i remember last year when jason started this thread, i’d asked him questions about getting into UCI cuz i was all freaked out when admissions time came. ahha HI Jason, well i got in and completed my first year :D

First year Bus. admin major taking:
writing 39b
math 2b
econ 20a
management 10a

how does it sound?

Another question: I live close to UCI so i am not dorming, i have a PC at home ~5 yrs old. Do i need to buy a laptop?? Should I?

jinks: depends what classes you are taking.

Laptop is nice for classes where you might want to take notes in class. It was useful for me in BME1, but I took notes with a notebook for half the quarter anyway, and when i started bringing my laptop, I was on aim and facebook half the time.

Other freshman classes where a laptop might be useful include bio or some art history or w/e random breadths.

But laptop is by no means necessary. I’d probably study better with a notebook in front of me since I get distracted with a laptop.

So in conclusion:

No

Not really.

Have a flash drive so you can use computers in the library with your own data though.

i think u should just use the PC u have at home because do u really wanna lug a laptop around all the time? but if u feel u will do better if u take notes with a laptop, then get one. otherwise, use a notebook and pen and just use the PC and get a flash drive or something and go from there. laptops r usually useful if u dorm

From my experience, you only need a laptop for social sci/humanities/social eco/etc. classes (maybe bio). I’m taking Philos 4 right now, and it’s one of the only times I get to bring a laptop to class.

It just happens to be Jason’s birthday so…

Say Happy Birthday to your favorite College Confidential UCI forum helper!

HBD jason, lol.

holy s**t bro happy b-day bro! Thanks for all your help on deciding classes. Hope you have a good one.

happy bday jas0n!
and thanks for being so helpful in this forum (:

2 questions: Do i have to attend SPOP day 2? ANd how come i had to pay $80 for SPOP?

i believe they allow you to checkout anytime on the 2nd day, I don’t know about any earlier than that

and you pay $80 because my friend said it was the “scholarship price” but i really don’t know much beyond that lol (maybe something to do w/ financial aid?)

What to do between classes at UCI?

As of now my classes are spread out that i have 1-2 hrs between classes and even 3. (is that the case with a lot of you guys?) what do you do between classes?

well depends, do you dorm or commute?

commute 10char…

go to the library and finish all your homework.

go the library and take a nap

have lunch

visit your friends who live in dorms

it’ll be better next quarter if you have a lot of units because you get to choose classes earlier. I tend to pack all of my classes in the morning so i get to screw around all day and evening.

im here for the summer and usually i just hang around at the food court or go to starbucks and go online or do my hw

Engineering gateway is open 24/7 (minus the couple of hours used for cleaning Tuesday mornings. Study there. Sleep there. Eat there. Live there.

(btw, it’s a comp lab with OK computers that you can easily do your work on.)

Where is the best place to go for a nap?

How and when do we talk to our academic dean if we want more than 20 units for a quarter?

I say the two libraries are good places to nap. There aren’t that many couches on campus though. I would be sleeping on campus often if there were.

I don’t think you can take over 20 units in your first quarter. You need a decent GPA for the dean to allow you to go over 20 units also. I’m not clear about this, but it should be an easy process if you step into the counseling office and ask the front desk. I hope someone else can answer this.
