Jazz Audition Repertoire

S is auditioning on jazz piano. The Eastman audition information says that he needs 3-4 pieces in varying styles, and his thinking is that if he lists 3 pieces they will give him longer to play on each one rather than moving on to get in all 4. One of the pieces is his own arrangement, and he especially wants to showcase that one. I see his point, but also suggested that if they say 3-4, they might really want 4. I have read on this forum that it is common to be stopped before they finish, so he should be prepared for that in any event. Any thoughts on the matter?

Chances are they will stop him before he is finished to save time after they have an idea of how he plays, but he should certainly prepare 4. Being over-prepared is a good thing.

I would prepare four. You never know how it might go–it is very possible they will ask him which songs he’s prepared and ask him to play only two of them that they think show a certain range. We found it varied all over the map. Hopefully someone with Eastman-specific experience will chime in with some more direct advice. He will probably NOT play full songs in any case.
