Jazz Standards for Auditions

Many classic Musical Theatre songs by Cole Porter and others have become more attached to the Jazz world than to the musical theatre world. I was wondering if it was best to avoid songs that are more connected with Jazz, or if I should go with the attitude, “if it’s from a show, it’s a-ok!”?

It’s fine as long as you can connect with the song, and it’s a plus that most people won’t be doing that. Besides a good musical theatre professional will always have at least 1 standard in the book.

Hi Alfieism,

Those songs are fine - one caution - make sure you are performing the song as written and not with the riffs that Ella or Frank might have added.

Good Luck!
