We had the best luck with Cinch jeans at Cavenders. Go for the white label – they do not look western. son wears them with his Polo extra long button downs all over Villanova. They have 28-w by 38-l on up.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I may be brave and hit the stores with him before Christmas to take advantage of some of the great deals. I will definitely be heading to Penneys, Pacsun, J Crew, and Banana Republic, as they are all at the local mall, so even if I have to return them at least I don’t have to pay shipping.
Thanks especially to bus driver… I think I can convince him to hang out somewhere while I pre-shop.

Bus driver: I have done the same thing…perhaps over indulgent but we are still talking afterwards and he is appreciative of anything that makes this easier
Had never heard of cinch…will have to see if they might work…
Anyone find xtra long pajama pants (like the flannel ones) or robes…son is 6’9 and super thin…would like to send him to school with both
but have been striking out

For J Crew and Banana Republic, you may have to try on for waist size only and then order the talls online. At my JC Penney, I have to order the talls online.

Triplet, I just read that Old Navy online has talls in their light weight sweats (tee shirt material). The reviews said they are quite long. <a href=“Old Navy”>Old Navy;

My son is 6 feet, about 140 lbs. and ideally would wear a 30/34–which is almost impossible to find. So he ends up buying a lot of 30/32s and wearing them low on the waist (he is always losing/forgetting his belt anyway so this works out pretty well).

We have found, as another poster said, that skinny jeans don’t look that skinny on a skinny person. They just look “normal.” The best source we have found is Uniqlo in NYC–it’s a Japanese company, and I believe its only U.S. locations are in the city. They don’t have an commerce website but apparently will ship from the store. We have had good luck when we have been there, and also have asked visiting friends to brave the madness (it’s a big, busy, loud store) and bring some back for us. They fit great and they’re not too expensive (maybe $60 max?).

H&M can also be good for the same reason–caters to a fashion-conscious, slender demographic. But their size selection can be hit or miss.

You can have Levis made to order, but it seems spendy.

My H wears a 29, but his inseam is 34.

It is interesting that some kids can spend days, weeks, shopping, nothing they like to do better…and others just hate it, it is so painful for them. Anything we can do to make it easier for them, or they’ll be wearing the same clothes they’ve had for the last several years!

My kids HATE shopping. Last year, I bought a dozen pairs of dress slacks for S. He fit ONE pair! He’s a slim 28/30 (really he’s probably a 27, but no one makes a 27). This year, I’ve bought him a LOT of long-sleeved dress shirts. Have no idea if any will fit, but hope he’ll like at least a few of them. Fortunately, S has been able to acquire some dress slacks in his size in Thailand and elsewhere. The Men’s Warehouse has some interesting sizes, including some very slim sizes, so will see if he’s interested in checking it out.

Ideally, yes, they do try on the jeans/slacks or you have to return. At least, I limited purchases to a few stores–Costco, Macy’s Express and Sears so returns will be simpler (did save all receipts too).

Sorry this is slightly OT, since S did NOT want jeans, just at least dress khakis or dressier slacks.

Slightly off topic as well, but we have had good luck with the Marc Anthony dress shirt line at Kohls. It is slim cut and fits my son very well with no blousiness and none of the extra material he experiences with the regular dress shirt cuts. I’m off to the old navy site to check out the light sweat pants
, happy hunting everybody!

Land’s End makes a reasonably priced khaki hemmed to order with a max inseam of 36".

I think one reason that these boys hate to shop is that it is SO hard to find things that fit them well. And when we do find them they are never the height of fashion. S2 doesn’t care, he will live his whole life in jeans and t-shirts, but S1 is in a design field and he wants some style, particularly in his work clothes. Surprisingly he has had good luck in vintage stores with a trip to the tailors. His suit is a classic 1950’s gray flannel suit – looks like something Cary Grant would wear!

I just found 28 x 32 Levi’s 514 at Macy’s yesterday for 39.99. I go through this every year with jeans for my son. In the past, I have had to do a modified version of busdriver’s plan, where I buy several sizes and variations, bring them home for him to try on, then return the discards, and buy more of the winner. Fortunately S seems to have stopped growing, so this year all I had to do was look for his size. Unfortunately, his size is very hard to find.

Another vote for the American Eagle Slim Straight. These actually look like they fit my S as opposed to all the others we’ve tried that look like they’re about to fall off! My H likes Levi’s 513 Slim jeans which are slightly more fitted in the leg than the 514s.

^^I think that is the style DS wears. Grandma laughs at his jeans though-the back pockets overlap because he is so skinny and has no butt :D.

I wear 30x34 and am pushing 50 years old. Back in college it was 28x34, but with big thighs from bicycle racing. Availability, I have found, has gotten better over the years for skinny guys. Levi’s used to be pretty much the only things I could find, but I lived in LL Bean flannel lined jeans during the winters.

Again slightly off-topic, but for splurge worthy casual pants and jeans look at AG Jeans (Adriano Goldshmied, available at Norstrom). Waist sizes down to 28 and length to 34. And a second mention for Hugo Boss (about $160) and their flat-front khakis, though they were probably only 34 1/2 inseam unhemmed.

^Try Levi’s 511’s in a 30 waist. Here’s the look of them.

^For a slightly more roomy fit in the leg, try Levi’s 513. They’re fitted, but not as much as the 511’s. The leg is a little more fitted than the Levi’s 514.

<a href=“Banana Republic”>Banana Republic;
^For Slim Khaki’s, try Banana Republic Emerson Fit.

^All of these suggestions are based on first hand experience :)

For expensive and more trendy jeans, Guess has a slim cut that works well too.

I wonder what tall men do?
My H wears 33"- 34" & he is 5’7". His size hasn’t changed since high school & last month, I scored on a pallet of denim from Levi’s for CyberMonday.
Womens jeans on the other hand seem to come extra long & I wouldn’t be surprised if the inseam was 36" even if the waist was 20".

I am getting so many good ideas here, I am going shopping today. Won’t buy anything, but will scope them out for a possible quick run with my son (I know I only have about half an hour of his patience). What makes this harder that even when we find something that seems to fit, of course they delay doing laundry until pants are really dirty…therefore they become very baggy (and who wants to wear a belt, certainly not notched up to wear it’s supposed to be, leaving them practically falling down). Ahhhh!!

^34 is a long inseam for someone that height. That is a pretty common inseam for someone around 6’. It just really depends on how long your legs are I guess. DS is proportionate, 6’1" and a 36" inseam but Dh is 6’ with a long torso and a 32" inseam.

Oldest & I are around 5’2", our inseam is 30". Youngest is 5’8", her inseam is about 32" ( she also wears low waisted

H’ inseam in* non- *shrink to fit, is actually 32", I forget that they are different. Hope I didn’t get the sizing mixed up for all those jeans I bought him!
