If you find a shape that seems like it would work but the in-store sizes are too big, check the store’s website. American Eagle has waist sizes as low as 26 on their site.

OP here. I gave my son Lucky jeans for Christmas, but I had about 15 pairs from various places for him to try on.
The jeans from Gap were all too big, even in size 28. It’s very hard to find 27s - I’m not sure I’ve seen any from Gap.
The Lucky jeans I got had button flies (the woman who sold them to me didn’t point that out), so he wouldn’t consider them. He did try them on, and they were probably the smallest - they actually fit him well. All of their jeans seem to run low though, and he really doesn’t like that. When I return the one’s I got, I will buy more if they have any that run higher in the waist.
The one’s he decided to keep are both from American Eagle. They are a little big in the waist, but they are better than most. I ordered Levi’s from Kohl’s with my 30% coupon, but they won’t be here for a couple of days. Unlike my other son, he says 2 new pairs are plenty, but I would like to find him another pair or two that fit.

So glad you found some jeans that work OK for your S. It sure can be a challenge finding the right fit for our loved ones.

S tried on the shirts he was given and didn’t really like any of them. Most of them did not fit him properly–sleeves too long, and not fitted enough so they “hung” on him. He says he really has enough clothes and needs to try on things that he’s going to buy/wear to be sure it is a good match. Oh well, I did try and now give up. Will let him handle his own clothing needs.

I bought DS 3 pairs of slim straights from AE size 32"waist 36"inseam. All are baggy in waist. I don’t think it is possible to buy 31" waist with36" length unless custom tailored. DS needs to gain 10 pounds. He is taking a weight training class next semester. Just needs to eat lots of protein and some healthy fats while lifting to bulk up a bit.

Another Mom of a tall skinny S chiming in. Minnymom, it certainly is possible to get 31w, 36l - Levi’s has them in many styles on their website. S used to be 28, 36, which was tough, but he’s been working out a bunch, and eating a tremendous amount (unbelievable how my grocery bill has multiplied since he’s been home!). Now that he’s 31, 36 it is so much easier to find clothes. He has very long arms too, and it is really hard to find shirts that have long enough arms but don’t have huge waists. Thanks for all the tips here.

H was a 29 waist when we married 26 years ago. It was a challenge finding him clothes that fit and that he liked. Our S is probably a 27 waist but does manage to sort of fit a 28 inch waist. He likes his clothing to fit but not be “tight,” so it’s best when he can try on the garments. It is a GREAT challenge helping him figure out what looks good on him–his size is challenging. Inseams of 28" are ideal, to avoid hemming.

Cool thread! My DS is skinny, but not too tall. Last summer he actually lost weight and was down to 101, but now he’s about 108. He used to wear the Levis514, but they were too variable. Each pair slightly diff, and his weight fluctuating. We got him 3 pairs on line at… wait for it… hasn’ been mentioned yet…Walmart! Yep. Cheap, slim cut, nice colors, and adjustable waist, which he really likes (and no one knows about or can see). I’m happy enough with them. There’s only so much you can do with really skinny boys! It was easier when the “boys” sizes all came in a slim version.

DS13 got a new pair of 514’s in the size HE wanted. I would’ve said one size bigger… They are snug and look good, but a bit too tight in thee, um… “package area” ;D Now he’s thinking of looking into Wrangler’s because Brette Farve advertises those and how they may extra room in the crotch area (for cowboys and riding horses I suspect? )

Wandered into the new H&M at our mall and the shirts and sweaters looked surprisingly slim, long and with very long arms and on a whim bought a long sleeved t shirt (kind of Long underwear type material) as a stocking stuffer…would never attempt pants for my 150 pound, six nine son but came home from work and he was wearing the shirt yesterday!!! Funny how excited a mom can get about a clothing win when it is so frustrating for them to even find the basics( no answers for the pajamas pants or robe yet) BUT I see more H&M in his future for the January birthday!!!

Minnymom–I was going to tell you to look online but …I just looked online and they don’t have the 30x36’s any more, great, now what are we going to do…

DS needs a belt with the 30’s already, no way he can go to a 32 without looking foolish…

Here is an interesting website for tall options: [Men’s 38 Inch Inseam Tall Jeans](Men's 38 Inseam Jeans - Tall Clothing Mall)

Right now i am trying to find a medium tall (36" inseam) drawstring jersey sweatpant with open bottom. I bought the Old Navy tall, but the lengths go longer as the sizes go up so medium tall was about 33/34"
