Jeffrey Epstein arrest and prosecution - is anyone following the case?

" It is a statement of undeniable fact, plus my long-held suspicion. "

I think it is wrong and unfair to attach names of politicians, regardless of party, and others, with mere speculation (not fact) to this issue based on what info there is to go on thus far. We are talking about underage girls here. That’s a serious, serious offense. We’re not talking about extramarital affairs or sexual contact with adults either consenting or non-consenting. Those things are definitely questionable as well or even illegal but this is a whole different level of scumminess. If concrete evidence comes out, that’s a different story but it hasn’t yet. Until then and until charges are made, better to keep one’s speculation out of it, IMO.

I’m just guessing that “underage woman” is a mainstream media attempt to distinguish between a young teenager and, say, a child in elementary school.

Not sure the majority of people are ready to understand the terms pedophile, hebephile, and ephebophiles & use them accurately.

“Not sure the majority of people are ready to understand the terms pedophile, hebephile, and ephebophiles & use them accurately.”

Not sure I or others need to do so. It’s splitting hairs regarding something where we don’t need to split hairs. IMO, it’s just atrocious whether 4, 9 or 14.

I don’t need to make fine gradations about child rape.

Does everyone think this is an isolated case? I sure hope but if this was possible for so long, it seems probabey there could be other similar cases.

It was an interesting article, but why so many commas?

Also, ALL babies in NICU have security ‘on them.’ The wards are secure. I could put anyone I wanted on a list of who COULDN’T visit my daughter. The security guards regularly stopped people from wandering into the NICU because they were too noisy, too dirty, or just too many in the group.

But she does make Epstein sound really creepy.

I think stories like this make it clear how hard it would have been to get a federal conviction. His attorneys were all over this stuff.

Anyone else hear the theme to the Godfather playing in the background?

In most states, the age of consent is 16 or 17, although a person doesn’t become an adult for other purposes until 18.

Sometimes that ‘age of consent’ is for a partner who is within 4-5 years, so a 16 year old can give consent to someone who is 20, but not someone who is 31.

Follow-up question - I wonder if a 16 or 17 year old can legally consent to prostitution or other sexual activities performed for money (not including intercourse), such as when Epstein paid the girls for massages, etc.

^With the possible exception of Nevada, prostitution is illegal everywhere in the US whether a person is 16 or 66.

To be a licensed massage therapist in NYS, one needs to be 18. But let’s not kid ourselves on legitimate massage.

Prostitution is illegal in NYS. Where legal, the minimum age to work is almost universally 18 (Cuba and Nicaragua are younger). To be a client of a prostitute where prostitution is legal , presumably age of consent would apply (at least that is the case in Europe where legalized)

Prostitution is defined as engaging in sexual conduct with another person in return for a fee, money, or something else of value. Sexual conduct is not limited to intercourse.

So who is doing the research and reporting on “why now?”? Patterson’s book was out in 2016. People have know about Epstein’s depravity for years. None of this, sadly, qualifies as news.

So why is he being prosecuted now? Who authorized federal agents to conduct these investigations, who authorized the charging documents? Why now, rather than 5 or 10 or 15 years ago? There is a story in here that hasn’t been told and isn’t even being hinted at yet. But I want to know how this moved forward. Someone moved mountains, and deserves credit.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_the_United_States has a summary of the variations in laws regarding who is presumed to be able to consent to sexual activity. Yes, there are cases where the age difference matters.

Of course, prostitution is illegal in the US except for some places in Nevada.

And some of these girls were 14.

Because of the great reporter, Julie K. Brown, and the Miami Herald. Brown worked on the story for two years. She was able to get the victims to speak. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/article220097825.html

I really want to know where this guy got his fortune. He didn’t inherit it, he’s not the CEO of any company, I don’t think he worked very long on Wall Street. It’s just weird

@Iglooo - George Nader was just hit with more charges regarding pedophilia and child pornography. He’s been doing this a long time, was convicted once in the Czech republic, and was charged in the US in the 80’s but there was pressure to let him go because he had supposedly helped in the release of US hostages in Lebanon.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/george-nader-indicted-on-child-porn-child-sex-transportation-charges/2019/07/19/d70f28c0-a9a5-11e9-86dd-d7f0e60391e9_story.html?utm_term=.e2e829c60c80

He was picked up by Mueller’s team a couple of years ago for questioning. They confiscated his cell phones. They found child pornography on his phones, but it took a few months apparently, and he had already left the country. The Feds picked him up last month as soon as he landed at JFK (which makes me think, “mwahahahahahaha”.

A couple of days ago, more charges were filed against him, regarding transporting a child for sex back in 2000. For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone would do business with a person like this, someone already convicted of child sexual assault, and think, “well, he’s a good negotiator and knows the right people”. It’s astonishing.

Also astonishing that the man came back here, knowing his phones had data on them that would be considered illegal. I guess he’s gotten away with it so many times that he got sloppy.

It’s not a secret.

Julie K. Brown, a veteran investigative reporter at the Miami Herald, was at the paper in 2007, when Epstein got his sweetheart deal in 2007. When Alexander Acosta was appointed US Attorney General, her antennae went up. Wasn’t he the U.S. Attorney in Florida who gave Epstein that light sentence? She dug into it and produced this three-part series. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/article220097825.html

That’s when Dershowitz went on the offensive (to defend himself and his friends) to try to discredit Brown’s reporting, releasing a public letter to the Pulitzer committee urging them not to consider Julie K. Brown for the prize.

Epstein could not be prosecuted in Florida again due to the deal Acosta gave him. But New York could. He has a mansion in NY. NY investigators got right on it and have given credit to Julie K. Brown. Here’s a story abut how she did it.

She has done a magnificent job! There was a gawker article on Epstein some years ago. Did she write that one? Or someone else?

Who was the first one?

Bravo to her! This is the kind of investigative journalism I wish we saw more often.
