Jenskate,
Do you know anything about the transfer process at Rice “from the inside” and/or do you know anyone who transfered in? Is it a good idea to join the school in the sophomore year? Thanks.

i know a girl who transferred in a sophmore from hardin-simmons in abilene. She mainly hangs out with the freshmen…don’t know anything about her grades, etc. but she seems to be having a good enough time. Also, a lot of baseball players here are transfers from community colleges.
But that’s all the info I have, unfortunately.

That is really odd.

when do you find out nspeds?

May 15th…

why is that odd? they are good baseball players.

Not that they are baseball players, but with the amount accepted from community college; I cannot articulate why that strikes me as odd, it just does. Even though I am not in a community college, it makes me feel confident.

Edit: This is the first time I am hearing of students being accepted from community college. While it is widely known that even Harvard accepts applicants from community college, thus far, the only transfer acceptees into Rice that I have heard of were from schools such as UT or Texas Tech, and they also had extremely high stats; then again, you could accuse me of a hasty generalization. The three acceptees I know can hardly be a representation of the group of those who are accepted.

I think it’s sort of like applying to Rice as a freshman - which high school you attended doesn’t really matter, accept as a context for judging your achievements. Similarly, which college you went to is less important than what you did while you were there.

Of course, I don’t really know that or anything…but it seems that way.

Regardless, I do hope you are right:)

I’m glad to know that people sucessfully blend into the residential college system- as I hoped and somewhat expected they could. Ive already been in contact with a multitude of professors and such at the school I am planning to attend for my freshman year of college. Anything else you guys might recommend I do now?

As adumbrated in another post, be as detailed in regard to your focus. Applying as a transfer for Rice, just because it is Rice and nothing else is the best way to be rejected; you must successfully articulate why it must be Rice that fulfills your passions, and thus, you must identify those passions.

How about this little fact- I want to major in Astrophysics- and Rice is one of VERY few (like 10) schools that offer it.

Perfect, just do not articulate it in one line, be detailed! Also, try contacting some professors at Rice to establish some connections; I have a friend who is trying to transfer who might be a research assistant for one professor! These “small” details show that you have interest, which you already have even without conversing with these professors, but Rice cannot read your mind.

Edit: Does UT - Austin not offer astrophysics? If they do, you would have to explain why Rice can better suits your needs.

I’ve already talked to one of the physics professors at Rice. And that is one of many reasons I want to be at Rice. Im planning to compose an essay which includes them all.

Excellent, you are on the right track. Maintain a high GPA, make a good application, and get good recommendations; present a compelling case and I am sure you will do fine.
