<p>It really is striking but not at all surprising the hate that spews forth from so many here.</p>
<p>My God, the man has died, can’t you give it up even now.</p>
<p>The simple lack of decency by so many on the left never ceases to amaze.</p>
<p>I don’t see a problem with quoting the man’s own statements. Especially given that making public statements was his life’s work. </p>
<p>How is it more indecent to quote Falwell’s hateful statements than for Falwell to make the statements in the first place? </p>

<p>From your lips to God’s ears. But this administration has done just as risable things in all seriousness.</p>
<p>Ah, so we should ignore his hateful speech becuase he said it to get a rise out of people, that is the justification…I get it, you can say mean hateful things, live a life of cruelness and bigotry, and then say, just messing around?</p>
<p>He is dead, so what, his legacy is stiil alive and what, we should show him decency when throughout his entire life he showed very little decency to gays, blacks, women and many others?</p>

<p>Of course it’s not surprising. When a man spends his entire public career sowing discord and hate, it’s only natural that the momentum he created in his life will continue a for while even after his death. Fortunately, he and the attitudes he promoted will eventually be forgotten.</p>
<p>When you live a life spewing hate, well, that legacy follows you forever, it doesn’t just vanish…</p>

<p>To me that’s not justification. It’s an admission that he was a cynical manipulator devoid of personal responsibility.</p>
<p>VoxDei, where was your concern, your condemnation, when Falwell was supporting apartheid? When he was preaching that God doesn’t answer the prayers of Jews? When he was preaching that AIDS is God’s punishment for homosexuality? When he blamed American women for helping to cause 9-11?</p>
<p>After 2 pm, the flags were at half-staff at 2 military bases in the DC area (when I happened to be at 2 posts today). </p>

<p>Of course its not justification, but I heard someone on the radie, a friend of his, try and push that claim, that he did it to get people riled, as if he really didn’t mean it…which was hogwash</p>
<p>what was interesting was how people found him sweet and charming in person, well, lots of tyrants through history had a certain charm about them, that doesn’t mean we ignore what they did and said</p>
<p>I just got off the phone with God, and I’m pleased to announce that Jerry Falwell was denied admission to heaven. I heard he was waitlisted at Bob Jones University for the Dead, however. I wish him luck with that. It is such a fine institution. He got a full merit scholarship to hell though, and that’s probably too hard for him to pass up. What could be a better fit!</p>
<p>Guess he’s going to find out if he was right about some of this stuff.</p>

<p>Thanks for posting that, Motherdear. How unfortunate that the flags can’t be lowered for our servicemen and women, but can be lowered for a jingoist like Falwell.</p>

But I’m sure the anti-accountability crowd is all over it.</p>
<p>my guess is he will have some suprising company, wherever he goes…</p>
<p>Do you believe most politicians mean every thing they say or are they grandstanding to get on TV?. Everyone pushing an agenda does it. The Sierra Club makes you think the air will kill you in a week. Jesse Jackson is a master of it. Hype sells. Did he believe being gay was a sin–yes. Did he believe gays helped 9-11 happen–No.</p>
<p>But the difference is that Falwell used religion to sell his product. So many, many fine, God fearing people now believe that gays and women are responsible for 9-11 (and all his other party planks) because their spiritual leader told them so. </p>
<p>To me there’s no way to look at that other than cynical, irresponsible, and a total betrayal of the trust his followers placed in him.</p>

<p>Bad analogy. Most politicians don’t claim to speak for God or claim know what God thinks or what His intentions are.</p>
<p>Also Falwell, didn’t need to be outrageous to get on TV. He already had his own TV show that he paid for himself. No, Falwell said ridiculous things because he believed them himself, and he wanted to convince us that God believed them also.</p>

<p>I’m dreading days of lying in state under the Rotunda with serpentine lines of grieving Republican faithful filing by the casket.</p>

<p>I completely forgot about this one. He made awful statements about the members of another church (on TV no less), lied about it, offered a reward for anyone who could prove he was lying, then reneged on that promise. </p>
<p>The whole mess ended up in court, where he lost and had to honor the reward…but not before filing an appeal so frivolous the judge added an additional fine.</p>
<p>I guess now that he’s finally where he can’t hurt anyone any more, it is a little bit amusing, in a PT Barnum kind of way.</p>
