Jerry Falwell has died

He was interesting.

I wonder if out of respect they’ll take down those idiot websites maligning and mocking the man.

I don’t really know much about him, but the ridicule and even hatred directed toward him always struck me as way out of proportion to anything he might or might not have said or done.

He was a lightening rod, that’s for sure. In some ways his opponents on the left underestimated or caricatured him. I certainly didn’t care for his politics. And his Christian beliefs were far afield from mine. But I commend two things he did in his public life; he established homes and services for young single mothers and he renounced Jim Crow segregation and apologized for being a strenuous and outspoken segregationist.

Why take down the sites? Falwell made himself a public figure, so why now?

I find him pretty horrid…and sorry he is dead, but that doesn’t mean he was any less horrid

and don’t slam me for being honest, as for his late life apology, sometimes harm done is not rectified by saying oppsy

swell fallwell quote:
"“I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way—all of them who tried to secularize America—I point the finger in their face and say you helped this happen.”

him placing blame for 9-11

Funny how that works! You did not seem to extend the same courtesy to people were “being honest” when Mollie Ivins died.

xig, when Reagan died I must not have appeared as concerned by the “great man’s passing” as I should have been . A very good but very conservative friend took some issue and used the "we should show him honor at least on the day he died. He was , afterall, our President. " tact. I simply asked him if he would feel the same thing when Carter or Clinton died. The conversation was over. ;)

One of the Teletubbies can sleep well tonight. The crusaders are not going to come after him.

Although I can feel sympathy for the people personally affected by the Reverend’s death, I personally do not mourn the loss of a man who brought so much hate into Conservative politics and to the Christian religion.

That sure is a popular website around these parts.

I have new respect for Rev. Al. He was just on Matthews’ show and (to Chris’ chagrin, it seemed) refused to say anything negative about Falwell.

Said over and over he was a “decent” and genuine guy. Always disagreed with him politically, but Falwell said what he believed and didn’t mind if people were opposed to it. Said what a lot of people thought but were afraid to say. Always extremely gracious toward Rev. Al and any people he came in contact with. Not greedy. Did not work just for showmanship. An old time religion guy who sincerely believed what he preached. Had occasion to witness him in unguarded moments and was never anything but a decent guy. As a Reverend he actually agreed with many aspects of what Falwell said. Appreciated having met him many times on Chris’ show.

Rev. Al is a smart and decent guy (too) in a lot of ways; too bad he made so many mistakes along the way due to his own personal failings.

JF himself admitted he made some of his more outrageous comments just to get a rise out of the usual suspects.

While this may not bring me much popularity here…

I stand by everything Dr Jerry Falwell has said…and am mouring the loss of a great Christian leader. Graduation this weekend just will not be the same without Dr. Falwell there to shake my hand as I graduate from their adult program.

Dr Falwell will be sorely missed!

CNN had a commentary saying that Falwell made it respectable for ministers to be active in politics. How absurd! Haven’t they heard of Martin Luther King? There wouldn’t be a civil rights movement if not for the black church and the other progressive (Jewish and Christian) religious leaders that organized and supported it.

To me that puts him in a worse light, not better. Especially given the large number of his flock who treated everything he said like gospel.

no tears being shed here.

RIP the hateful Immoral Majority.

*One of the Teletubbies can sleep well *
Falwell knew his way around sound bites and he didn’t get the connection between spouting that being homosexual was a choice and a sin against God and violence against homosexuals.

The Christians I know- wouldn’t like to be lumped in the same category

I think Jerry Falwell could have been much more effective in preaching his Christian message if he had done it with a little more Christ-like humility.

When you read the writings of theologians from centuries past you see many of them agonizing over their worthiness and constantly questioning whether they were doing the right thing in God’s eyes. This in huge contrast to Jerry Falwell’s smug and self-certain manner – who apparently never entertained the least doubt whatsoever over whether God actually endorsed his intolerant and unsympathetic views of the world.

In many of the religious and philosophical readings I’ve had the honor of studying in college this year, I do sense a genuine difference with some modern religious figures in attitude and self-perception with regards to humanity, the wider world, and any superior being. Good point, Coureur.

Rumor has it the feds are going to order the flag at half-staff for Falwell. Ugh.

Why be sorry when a 73 year old dies? He had a long life, and if his beliefs are correct, he got into heaven- what more can a person want? And if my beliefs are instead correct, he still had a long life, we all have to die sometime, where he ends up is his fault/problem.

Let’s hear it for separation of church and state, Conyat- someone was joking.

I see this thread going the way of all discussions involving religion- I wonder how many posts it will generate. I am so glad I’m me and not him!!!
