Love the green one!! So appropriate. Bookmarked. Thanks!!!
OMG, OMG, OMG!!! I am going to get an ulcer, I kid you not. Suffice it to say that I believe there are too many regulations related to higher ed … but I also believe some of them are necessary … and I would not want to see the ones that should stay, removed.
I seriously thought I would find a link to an Onion article. Apparently Jon Stewart was a guest on Colbert last night and said, “The presidency should age the President, not the public”. I am putting my faith in the free press, the Constitution and the fortitude of attorneys defending Constitutional rights.
Brilliant!
Science March on Washington April 22.
Science March = April 22 = Earth Day
This doesn’t seem contradictory to me. He wants government to stay out of it, and wants private institutions to be able to make their own rules. Perfectly consistent. Other private institutions could make different rules.
That said, I can’t see any good from him leading this commission. Except that maybe my government will work the way it often does, and the report will get a fancy name and leather binding, and will sit on a shelf unread and un-acted on for all of eternity.
When you put it like that, no, that doesn’t seem contradictory, if that is the intent. However, I suspect it could work out differently. I am talking about a general view of freedom, and the overall idea of lecturing about freedom seems hypocritical when you also tell people what they aren’t allowed to do, both on and off campus, for four years, even on their time away from the school. I suspect that they are forcing people to take a pledge they know they will not honor.
JFJ…Oh good grief. Glad I’m all done with sending kid to college!
Me thinks the number of applications from US kids to Canadian colleges might see an uptick in the coming years… My friend is seriously researching if she can send her kids to schools in her native country.
^And those of international students.
We just decided to read Marg. Atwood for Bookclub :-&
I read on the MIT site that 45% of the grad students are international. NPR interviewed the head of a lab at Harvard. His wife and many of the students are nervous. I suspect many grad programs are facing similar situations.
Since when did I live in a parody universe? Canadian Universities are starting to look like an attractive option, well they would if I had any kids.
Last night I attended a tech networking event. I met a couple of young adults working on a startup having to do with computer chips optimized for artificial intelligence. They have some startup funding. One of them was born in Iran and has been here for 4 years as a grad student or postdoc. His wife had almost gotten a visa to join him–it was in process for 3 years. Poor guy. What can you say? “I’m sorry our country is so stupid.” X_X
The “freedom” Falwell is expounding on is really freedom to abide by and conform to his fundamentalist evangelical brand of Christianity. An attitude which is shared by many fellow like-minded co-relgionists.
Also, from what I’ve gathered from Liberty U’s student guidebook available online, they can and do reserve the right to conduct inspections of dormrooms or if one is given permission/mandated to live off-campus(if under 21/over 21), the off-campus residence to see if there’s any possessions which could be considered “contraband” by Liberty U authorities. Some contraband includes some Christian rock/modern Christian music albums.
Any contraband found will result in a certain number of demerits and if one accumulates too many, one could or even expelled.
Of course, as a private religious institution they’re well-within their rights to do so…especially in the name of their fundamentalist evangelical religion and students technically did “voluntarily” agree when they accepted the admission offer. However, many students were effectively forced to attend this and similar universities by parents without regard to their own children’s level of interest in attending an evangelical religious institution with such restrictions on one’s personal freedoms.
They’ve always been an attractive option. ![]()
They also do some cool research.
Help me out here - I have a younger one still in college and probably all 3 looking at grad school. What trouble could this man cause? Mine would stay away from for-profit schools and religious schools anyway so what other harm could he do?
Just trying to be forearmed…
Good question, greenwitch, how does this affect us here? For those of us who aren’t interested in sending our kids to certain sort of schools, how would this affect us? It’s not like they’re going to be brainwashed into going somewhere they don’t want to…
