Favorite song and concert?

Me - Sugaree, Filmore East early 70’s

Ripple, Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 2 consecutive nights late 1971, early 1972 with The New Riders of the Purple Sage

New Riders of The Purple Sage - Spectrum 1970

merrymom, are you from Philly? I am too. I noticed the Spectrum in your post. I grew up there as well.

I recall going to see The Dead with my older brother who was a total Deadhead, but I can’t recall where it was…I may have been visiting him at college (I was in high school) at the time…early 70’s…and he went to Brown and so maybe it was in Boston.

Collegeboard, so have to also mention the great concert at Villanova 1971.

Crosspost Soozie - could be!

I saw the Dead in Greensboro NC when I was in college. Can’t remember what year, because I saw the Police there too and I get the two mixed up. I think I saw the Dead in around 1981.

Doubleplay, I saw your post a few days ago under Kitty’s thread, so I thought other GD people might be here.

Was surprised nobody mentioned Ed Sullivan and the Beatles when I last looked.

I love The Dead, saw them many times. Probably the most memorable was in '86 with Tom Petty and Bob Dylan at RFK stadium. I also caught them at The Spectrum in '79. Great show from what I can remember. Anybody in trade shows?

Dark Star. Yankee Stadium, 1971

I met Jerry Garcia at a store near our house, had on the coolest tie he designed, and he signed my bag of onions, he died not long after

He was very gracious, I can’t of stopped by his car

O.K., I’ll bite;
Alligator, Fillmore West, summer of '71 or '72
Hitched back to Oakland afterwards.
Saw Jerry Garcia, Tom Fogarty(I think Tom), and Merle Saunders in a small bar in Berkley later that same summer.

Portland (OR) Coliseum - 1973

“China Cat Sunflower” or “I know You Rider”

34 years ago? How is that possible?

Wharfrat2, what do you mean by “Anyone in trade shows?”

Song: Box of Rain, probably. But never heard a good version live.

Concert: Buffalo, whatever the arena was called then, 1973.

RIP jerry,

I was a late bloomer, and didn’t see my first show until JFK 7/10/89 Got to see nearly 30 more before my last show on 3/19/95 The Unbroken CHain breakout.

Phil Lesh and Bob Weir still tour with their respective bands.

I’ll be seeing Ratdog (weir’s band) open for the Allman Brothers next week.
And Phil will be around here on Oct 12. Got tix for that too.

If Phil can play at age 67 (one of his sons goes to Stanford) then I can get my bones shaking to the music.

Mini, after you mentioned Dark Star, I looked for that album to listen. Horrors, it was missing. So were my Jethro Tull albums and Pink Floyd. I know who has them.

There are in fact lots of different recordings, including about 9 pirated ones. I like one from 1976 where it was linked to St. Stephen, and then to Not Fade Away.

Summer of 1973 was my Grateful Dead summer. Saw them at RFK Stadium in a twin bill with the Allman Brothers in June. And then again in July with the Allmans and The Band at Watkins Glenn.

I’ve seen them in many other places, including the old Boston Garden, the Spectrum, and (my favorite) the Fox Theater in Atlanta.

Can’t say what my favorite song is. Too many different songs. Too many different moods.

BTW, Phil Lesh and Friends is a smokin’ hot band. In their most recent incarnation:

Phil Lesh - bass
John Scofield - jazz guitarist
Larry Campbell – long time Dylan guitarist
John Molo – Bruce Hornsby’s drummer
Rob Barranco – keyboards
Joan Osborne – vocals

They are often joined by Trey Anastasio or Greg Osby on sax.

They released a live CD and live DVD recorded last year at the Warfield Theater in SF. Outstanding, intricate jazzy grown-up music. They do a range of Dead material (except Lesh refuses to play any Weir songs), interspersed with rock classics from the Stones, the Band, Dylan, and so forth.

When they played the new Bethel Performing Arts Center in Woodstock (availalble for free download from their website) last year, the third set was the original setlist, in the exact order, that the Dead played at the Woodstock festival.

The wonders of Google - I found a site with recordings of GD concerts -

Here’s my first Dead concert:
