JHU Essay Promts

1- where can I find the prompts? online?
2- How are the prompts at JHU? are they fairly standard college essay prompts like " tell us about EC’s that mean a lot to you…" and so on, or are they odd like UChicago’s and very distinctive?

if you applied using the regular JHU app this year these were your two questions:

 • What class has been the most interesting to you and why?
 • If you had $10 to spend in one day, what would you do?

The people who applied through CommApp were just given the latter of these questions to answer

CommonAppers had to do both questions as well as the CommonApp essay/short answers.

I suggest doing the commonapp because the extra essay really allows you to personalize your app even further and give the admissions staff some more insight into what kind of person you are.

True… but JHU’s app is really short and easy! :)

i did jhu’s reg app cuz my counselor said that it looks like you want to go there more than if you did commapp… but i applied ED so that is a diff scenario… i did commapp for my other colleges (the ones that accepted it) and it is really nice…i would recommend it to any1.

colleges are legally bound to not discriminate against the common app. i used it and still got in. it would be interesting, though, to see if the acceptance rates differed by application type. the common app is a life saver if you’re applying to more than 5 or so schools.

are you required to answer both essay questions? What is the word limit? and can u split it between the two questions like with the UC apps?

Masha - I don’t recall JHU providing a word limit on their prompts. The $10 essay didn’t have anything that even suggest a word limit (at least I don’t recall), but they wanted the intellectual interests essay to be short. Word limits really don’t matter…colleges just don’t want a 20 page term paper. And yes, you are required to answer both questions. And I’m not sure what you mean about “split it between” because I didn’t apply to any UC’s.

by the spliting I mean, the UC’s give u a 1000 world limit ( I coudl be wrong on what the world limit actually is) and you have 3 questions to answer… so u can use 333 or so for each question of u can use 500 on one, and 250 on the other two

no word limits, and yes you have to answer both… The $10 essay says “briefly describe” mine was about 1/2 - 5/8 pg long Single spaced
