JHU Likely Letter

Is it normal to find out 36 hours before ED l deadline that you have received a likely letter? It feels so last minute - or is this how it goes?

Normal? Not really. Does JHU sometimes do things abnormally? Yes. Is this you? Congratulations!

I don’t think it’s that uncommon. Sometimes LL arrive after the ED deadline. Ultimately, it depends on when the athlete turns in their application and how efficient AOs were in reading these applications. Remember, it is the admissions office that issues the LL, not the coach. It’s not a big deal one way or the other.

In any case, I agree that congratulations are in order!

Did you have no idea that you had coach’s support and would/should apply ED? Is this for lax or a different sport, with different admissions input (lax plays D1 at JHU and has scholarships)?

It is not unusual for likely letters at Ivies or other top schools to come after the applications are submitted. Athletes would have been told by their coach if support would be submitted to admissions and whether to apply ED.

It’s not unusual, it’s ALWAYS after applications are submitted.

Likely letters are sent out by admissions after the student has sent in an application. I don’t know if JHU is different, but that’s how the ivies work.

The LL may come before or after the general ED/REA deadline, but that’s a function of when the application is submitted.

My kids deadline, as required by the coach, was October 1. This was for all sports commits.
General early deadline for ED/REA published by the Ivy was November 1.

This. I’ve seen some posters on this site conflate Likely Letter with a positive pre-read/coach support/verbal offer. The misuse of the term can cause significant confusion. I wish folks would use the correct nomenclature.

@cltrising Yes, good point on some confusing Like Letters with other forms of potential support.
I wonder if the OP meant finding out that they were in line to receive or selected to receive a Likely Letter with only 36 hr. notice to apply, and not that they had a LL already sent or in hand.
