JHU vs NYU vs UMich

All things considered including cost (assuming one received half tuition scholarships to NYU and UMich and nothing from JHU), distance (for someone living in NJ), living conditions, opportunities available, rigor of courses, ease of courses (a bit ironic, I admit), and reputability, which of these colleges would be the best choice for someone planning to major in Chemistry (and then apply to Med Schools)? No lengthy response needed. Just name the college. Thanks.

Duke .

BDM, LOL. :D

NYU is great for chemistry - I should know since I majored in it at NYU. It’s also pretty good for pre-med.

The real issue with NYU is that it takes a certain kind of personality to succeed there. You have to be very self-motivated and independent - there will be almost no hand-holding. Of course, it’s not a cheap school either, but you have some of the money problem solved.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

UMich, because you may be able to establish residency for med school admissions purposes (but check…) and therefore have an easier time getting into a top med school AND save a bundle.

Not necessarily any of the above. The director of admissions at JHU Medical School shared the list of colleges the last incoming class graduated from, and the students are from all over and every kind of school, including small LACs. What is most important in getting in to med school is how you do in college, and not where you went.

I am pretty sure doing your undergrad at Michigan does not earn you MI residency (but check with the school anyway). However, I have heard that going to school (med school anyway) in Ohio and living there year round will give you resident status after one year. I know none of your schools are in Ohio, but thought I would throw that out there.

1.) Undergrad on its own definitely does not earn you residency, but sometimes you can pull it off while you’re there using other things in combination.
2.) Graduate school (including medicine and law) is the same way except that it’s almost always possible to do so, instead of sometimes possible.
3.) The OP might already have Michigan residency.
4.) The OP might not want Michigan residency, depending on what his home state currently is.

Turns out the OP is currently an NJ resident – as he states pretty clearly in post #1 and I just can’t read – so cancel point #3 above.

Other applications may in a few days turn out to be moot if Penn ED comes back as an acceptance.

Haha, gj catching on to the Penn app bdm. Yeah, I’m pretty worried (which is why I started this thread in the first place). In case I don’t make Penn (which I feel is very likely given the extremely competitive nature of my school), I want to know what the next best option is. Thx for all comments guys.
