I was curious after what length of time it is appropriate to follow up on a job application that has not gotten a response either way. I just got a job at Walmart, but before I heard from them I applied for another position that would be an amazing opportunity (of the sort that would actually be relevant to my future career).

At this point, I’m ready to just move on with my life and get working, but I can’t seem to get this other job out of my head. I would be happy with a rejection if I could just hear SOMETHING either way. I wasn’t expecting by a long shot to even be considered seriously for the job, but I’d really just like to know. What can or should I do to follow up? Also, for the record I applied a bit less than a week ago but they said that they were moving quickly with the hiring process because they need the positions filled within the next week and a half or so.

Just call or email the company’s HR department and say, “I recently applied for the position of [x]. Would you be so kind as to tell me if the position is still open? If not, when might I expect to hear whether I’m being considered for the job?”

And don’t put off the job at Wal-Mart while you wait. Go work at Wal-Mart. If a better job comes along, give two weeks’ notice or as much as you can, and take the better job. It’s no big deal.

Thank you for the advice. I sent a courteous email and got a quick response back that they’d had a lot of applicants and had filled the positions quickly. I had already accepted the job at Walmart, so of course I wasn’t going to pass that up on a long shot. :)

I’m a little bummed about not getting picked because it would’ve been a really great position for me, but he said they have forwarded my resume and cover letter to their organization’s central headquarters and that they will contact me if any more positions open up within the program. So, given that this is very unlikely, I will be happily dealing with unhappy customers at Walmart for the rest of the summer, which I am thankful for with so many of my friends being unemployed.

hyperjulie, my daughter has had the same struggles as have many of your peers. I am glad to hear that you are not turning down a job at walmart, even though I am sure you had loftier goals and plans for your future
My daughter is not happy to be working back at the family business , but at least it is a paycheck and better than a lot of her fellow grads , both high school and college . And has also discovered that her fall-back of substitute teaching has been very rewarding and maybe a plan B
good luck to you
