Job loss

What if after filling out the FAFSA, my job situation changes. Could we be reconsidered for Financial Aid? Currently the only thing we qualify for is the Middle Class Income Scholarship. But if I lose my job we will drop below the 80,000 Blue and gold Opportunity level.

Yes you would have to call financial aid with proof. And of course, it depends if that were to happen before all awards were given out.

will this apply to Summer quarter at UC’s?

If you have a job loss, then likely the school will say “wait and see” if you find ANOTHER job. They’re not going to suddenly give you more money and then you quickly find ANOTHER job.

Summer aid is different, you’ll have to call your school about that…many do not have need based aid for summers.

And if I remember correctly, many schools ask for proof that you were laid off…and that you didn’t just quit.

I believe this student is asking about the cal grant monies. Is the Calgrant reconsidered if there is a job loss?

Timing might be an issue. Blue and Gold isn’t necessarily Cal Grant related, altho it’s often included.

The person hasn’t lost his job at this point, and hasn’t been told that he’s being laid off. HE’s just asking “if”. Much can depend when a job loss happens, because there isn’t an instant change. Much depends on how and when a job ends. …and if there is a severance.

If he were to lose his job this summer, then likely the school would tell him to “wait and see” for about 12 weeks to see if a new job were found.

I still don’t think that there is aid for summer, though.

I think that they are also consider if you were to receive a severance package (you would probably have to wait until the payments run out)

True…but aren’t most severance pkgs “lump sums”? Either way…the impact of a severance can be substantial if it’s equal to 3-6 months of salary.

No, in many cases you will have the choice of a lump sum payment or for your severance to be paid out in installments like your regular pay cycle.

UC Davis’ special circumstances review form isn’t even available until September of each year and they take several months to review them so by that time they can basically verify what your annual income is. They will then retroactively adjust your aid. I would assume the other UCs are similar but you can easily find that out by going to their website.
