When I look at job postings, I occasionally will see much higher than average rates of pay listed for some jobs. These aren’t scam jobs - they are real jobs, but the amount advertised in the ad is higher than typical for the profession or the area.

For example, I recently saw an engineering position offer to pay over $125k a year in a location where $65k a year might be more common.

Do companeis really pay this much to the people they hire? Or is this just a gimmick to get you to look at the ad, and then when they finally extend the offer, it’s the more typical $65k and not the $125k advertised?

Any real life experiences?

1) You should never think you’ll get a job just because you apply.
2) Don’t expect to earn more than average wages. Salary is often determined by experience & education & “other”. (“Other” might be things like special connections, alum, etc.)
3) If you are indeed offered to work for a higher than “average” salary, good for you.

The ads you see are “come ons.” You’ll apply, the agency will love you, and then they’ll tell you that THAT job is filled, but they have another . . . .

I could have sworn I already posted this!

If a company is advertising for a $125k engineer they are likely looking for someone with a lot of relevant experience who will be in a supervisory/management/leadership position. Engineers like this DO earn $125k per year…or more. Entry level positions pay $50k to $60k.

As Very Happy said, it is possible that the ad is a come on…but it could very well be that the WHOLE job discription/responsibilities are not listed within that ad.
