Job Search Update!

For all of those who are curious, the job search conference was AMAZING!!! I did 10 interviews (including one second round) overall.

I was in class yesterday when my phone rang with an unfamiliar number; our professors know we’re job searching so they allow us to step out to take calls. It was from a woman at one of my top choice schools who actually interviewed me at the conference. She said she LOVED our interview and wanted to invite me to campus! The on campus interview is often the final step in the interview process, and the schools generally only invite their top 3-5 candidates to campus.

I told her I was very excited and definitely wanted to come, but that I needed to talk with my supervisor before making any concrete plans. When we got in touch later in the day, she asked if I could come THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY!!! She said they usually don’t do things so quickly, but that they’re really excited about me.

I have such a good feeling!

Also, when I was talking with my parents about all of this, my mom told me that she and my dad are willing to help me put a down payment on a car this summer as a graduation gift! I’ve been driving my car since I was 15 and it’s just…time.

So many things just falling into place! Wish me luck. With any luck, I could have a job in the next week or two!

Such great news Grace! Wishing you smooth sailing through the campus visit.

I think your car needs upgrading. Good luck with the on-campus and thanks for posting! Some of us always wonder what happens to posters who ask specific questions, so the updates are appreciated.

I’m confused- a job or grad school (the campus reference)? Good luck either way.

Wis75, a job! I’m finishing up my master’s in Student Affairs and Higher Education so I will be working on a college campus, hence the campus visit.

Congrats… It must have been the bag that did it

Terrific! Can’t wait for an update after the weekend!

Excellent news!

Congratulations! I do hope you have better luck salary-wise in the higher ed arena than I have had, though. ;)

1214mom, LOL. ;)

kelsmom, I’m probably looking at 28-30 starting, but I also will have room and board. So I won’t pay rent/utilities/internet/etc.

YIPPEE!!!
This sounds like things are really going your way! The other interested Us had better move quickly before you get snatched up! Maybe they’ll have a bidding war on you and bump up your salary! With room, board, utilities & internet included, $28-30K would be a pretty comfortable starting salary. Can you take classes at the U where you will work as a fringe benefit? I know many Us do offer that to employees, as long as it doesn’t interfere with their jobs. One of my friends is getting a PhD that way!

HImom,

many Universities do indeed offer tuition remission as part of the benefits package. I’m not quite ready to start on a PhD yet, since I’m only just getting ready to finish my Master’s and at such a young age (I will be 23 when I start my first job, assuming I have a job by graduation). But it would definitely be a good option if/when I’m ready for that!

The job offer says 27K for this position, but that’s with a Bachelor’s. So I’m hoping that since I’ll have a Master’s upon starting my position, they’ll bump me up a bit. I’ll be very fortunate to have all that income as someone just starting out (especially without many living expenses), but I do have quite a bit of student debt to pay off and if I’m buying a car, I’ll have car payment and my insurance will skyrocket. Right now my car is worth basically scrap metal, so it’s really just liability insurance and very inexpensive.

It’s definitely going to be interesting if they make me an offer…it’s still pretty early in the process for a lot of other schools, and I don’t know how many of them would even be able to tell me where I am in their process; so I would have to decide if this one is worth completely walking away from some other positions that I’m also very interested in.

I don’t like this grown-up stuff!

I got my itinerary last night. I’ll be meeting with just about everyone but the President, from student staff members all the way up to the Vice President for Student Affairs. OYE!!!

Also found out today that the school has two openings, so my odds are doubly good! AND one of the positions would allow me to open a brand-new building!! I leave tomorrow :)

Good Luck to you!

Good luck, HGFM. What an exciting time for you.

Exciting!!good luck!

Thank you all! :)

It went VERY well! I felt like I really connected with everyone and that my experiences, skills, etc. really fit the institution. I think I could really do some great things there. I got some good feedback during my interviews (“good question,” “good answer,” etc.) and I just felt really great about things when I left.

They invited 6 people to campus for 2 different positions, so I’m looking at about a 33% chance that I’ll get it. I should hear back around the 28th. Which is a little scary since graduation is May 3rd, but it’s okay. I’m REALLY glad she actually gave me a date so that I don’t have to stress over it every time the phone rings.

As I was leaving, the woman who would be my supervisor told me she was glad I came and that should anything in my process change or should anyone else make me an offer to please let her know. All good signs IMO.

No other on-campus offers yet, but it’s still very early. We’ll see!!
