Jobs for Applied Math & Economics Double Major

Hi there, I recently joined College Confidential, so here’s some info about me.

I started out going to a 4-yr school and majored in computer science but withdrew after 2 years with a pathetic 2.7 GPA. Then, I went to community college and graduated with a 4.0 GPA and an A.S. in Accounting.

I then transferred to Rutgers in 2012 where my original plan was to be a math teacher, so I’m majoring in applied mathematics and am in the teacher certification program, but I started having second thoughts about teaching and decided to pursue a business profession.

So now I am an applied math and economics double major at Rutgers with a 3.9 + GPA, whose in the school’s honors program and pursuing a math teaching certification. I am president of the school’s Honor Society and the school’s community service club and have won around 15 scholarships and awards. I have been involved in undergraduate research in math and am doing a senior thesis on high school academic achievement. I have also passed the math praxis exam for teaching.

What I want to do is being able to find a good job in the business field after graduation.

My master plan is to:

 1. Graduate summa cum laude from the honors program in the Class of 2017 with a B.A in Applied Math, a B.A in Economics, a minor in accounting, and a minor in business administration.
 2. Obtain a math teaching certification
 3. Have two published undergraduate research papers: one for math and one for secondary education
 4. Do a congressional internship in Summer I 2015 semester either with a senator or at the White House
 5. Do 1 or 2 additional business related internships: one in Summer II 2015 semester and/or another in Summer 2016 semester.
 6. Get accepted into the Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) program, which is the premier career development institution that equips high potential African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans with skills, coaching and door-opening relationships to give them an edge in their business careers.
 7. Have won over 20 awards and scholarships
 8. Get accepted into Phi Beta Kappa

So, my question is: Assuming that I have accomplished everything in my “master plan,” what kinds of business-related (non-teaching) jobs will be available for me upon graduating and what are my chances of getting such jobs?

P.S. I know my goals are masochistically ambitious but I have high determination and drive and I am certain I can make them all happen. I may also want to get an MBA after about 5 years of work experience. Please provide serious and helpful information. Thank you,

You can get a job in finance. Many areas of banking will hire new graduates with math/econ majors - investment banking, sales & trading, operations, wealth management, finance, compliance…You can be an analyst in the finance department for many major companies or analyst for data analysis (Big Data).

I don’t think you should do #4. Many students get an internship summer of their junior year (between junior/senior year), and get an offer for a full time job after graduation. Most of those firms recruit Jan/Feb for the summer.

My daughter double majored math/econ, and is working at an investment bank. I assume you are an URM based on your #6. JP Morgan has a program to recruit URM. You may want to look into it. I hope you don’t get offended, but a lot of companies are actively recruiting URM for their programs. You have high GPA from a good school, so you shouldn’t have problem in getting into a good program.
