Jobs in CompE

I am considering switching from SoftE to CompE because I would rather not be stuck programming banking software in some office my whole life. I’d rather be working with a hardware devices whether it be programming embedded software systems or actually designing circuitry which is why I’m looking at doing CompE. What kind of job opportunities are there in this industry? Does anyone have any experience in the field who could shed some light on the subject.

I’d also like to hear the answer to this question. In addition to that, what’s the value of a Masters degree in CompE? Would it matter if the BS was in CompE but the MS was in another eng field, say bioengineering (as in would you still start out in a higher position simply with an MS in an eng field)?

OP, from what I gather, CE is probably the way you want to go if you’re positive that you want to work with computers, and especially that of hardware. If you’re not sure that you want to specifically do computer stuff and may just want to do electronics, then do EE because you can still do Hardware stuff (after taking some CS electives and such to be good with programming), and much more.

As far as jobs, CE is one of the best majors you can get. You can do patent law eventually, and since almost anything requires computers nowadays, you can not only find a lot of jobs but in various fields as well. For example, you can work with the computer systems in cars, and I even know a CE that’s in Vegas working with the computer systems for the Bellagio. So you can do a lot of stuff with CE.

You can do a few things.
You can design Mobos,Processors or GPUs for say ASUS,Intel or Nvidia.
You can most likely get a programming job.
You can get an MBA and do project managemnt or consulting,
You can get a J.D. and do Patent law as hook mentioned.
