Jobs with 61 series

I know the CS website says that you can get an entry level job with just the 61 series but how likely is it to get a job with just the 61 series at places like google or Facebook?

With the plethora of computer companies nearby, why restrict your job search to Google and Facebook?

let’s be real tea… given the choice, anyone in their right mind would pick google/facebook over any other company.

But is it possible to get a CS related job?

^ very unlikely IFF that is all the experience you have. Otherwise, all 800 kids graduated from 61A last semester, and 600 more this semester would all have jobs at Facebook this summer :o. There are kids who just took 61A in the spring or so, but they have had extensive previous programming experience, and ended up interning at Facebook/Twitter over the summer. I know personally one of my suitemates who is a spring admit taking 61A got an internship at Amazon this summer just 3 days ago. He’s been hacking for 6 years though…

Google, as far as I know, requires at least a junior standing with a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Why? It isn’t true, in any case.

Pretty sure it means that completing all of CS 61A, 61B, 61C (as opposed to just CS 61A) can land some types of computer software jobs.

“let’s be real tea… given the choice, anyone in their right mind would pick google/facebook over any other company.”

Big mistake in thinking that way. The size or the popularity of a company doesn’t say much about working condition/chance of advance/learning opportunities/salary.

In many cases, in small companies, especially when you’re new in the field, you know more about how the company operates, have more responsibilities, and your contributions make a greater impact to the company.

I spent about 10 years in large/well-known companies, and about 20 years in small companies. My preference is small companies. I must be in my “wrong” mind.

Could care less about “popularity”. i mean sure, google and facebook are popular…
but have you seen the behind the scenes footage?!?! their offices seem so chill and when you’re not working there’s lots to do there. there’s also a 30 minute documentary on google’s campus. watch it, then come back here hahaha.

Agree with Pentaprism and ucbalumnus, there are a lot of factors in choosing a job/career. HeartyBowl probably hasn’t had too many job offers that he has to decide on.

I have friends that work at Google, been to the campus many times, ate in their free cafeteria many times. That is why I know Google is not a good fit for me.

Just like Pentaprism, I spent many years in small, mid-size and large companies. I also prefer small companies. Several times, I had multiple job offers and had a hard time deciding. It is never an easy answer and it is different for everyone.

S has 4 job offers this summer, 2 are from top companies in his field. One tried to sell him that their employees do lots of traveling. One tried to sell him that their employees don’t do much traveling. S chose the one that don’t travel much.

I’m not trying to argue with you. I’m just saying you should not be blinded by the halo. I have experience firsthand and thus don’t need to watch any documentary about Google. FYI, Intel, Brocade and Google are among the companies I worked for. A few years ago I left a managing position at Google to join a company of 10 people. I’m now having more fun, making more money, and loving my job more than ever.

By the way, learn how to write properly. Clear communication is essential no matter what you do and who you work for.

(Disclaimer: English is not my native language. I started learning it when I came to this country).

@pentaprism

you takin a stab at my grammar? u mad bro? obviusslee that coment came from angur… didn’t mean to rustle your jimmies. was jus stating my opinioon… we coo?

I’m wondering the answer to OPs original question as well.

Get the **** out of here.

I second that.

A job, probably not. An internship, most definitely.
