Its positively droll to hear so many self-described geeks and nerds scold those big bad braggart bullies at such a distance of space and time.

This would be a standard bit on ‘Malcolm in the Middle’, and still, a very good one.

Curmudgeon–agree totally about the “my kid is an honor student at…” bumper stickers.

I wondered where other people in town got them; were they showing up at some event I didn’t know of? No, it turns out, years later when I mused abut that to my kids, that they’d been offered the chance many times to get them, but would sooner cut off their hands then take a chance I’d put something like that on my car…

Not that I would have; I loathed “baby on board” signs when they were in style too. ( In other words “we’re special; we have kids–crash into some other car instead, 'kay?”)

Curmugeon -

I’ve seen both versions - where they brag that they can, and they brag that they did, beat up some honor student. And it’s obvious they are in reponse to the bragging honor student stickers seen on other cars. I do not approve of boasting in most of its forms, which is why I never put any such bumper stickers on my car, nor would I dream of putting my D’s college decal on my car now.

What I was commenting on, was that this phenomenon is closest I’ve seen anybody come to admitting to being a bully. Except for these bumper sticker guys, all the bullies I knew growing up seem to have moved to another planet. This is one of the few instances where otherwise civilized people are willing to openly embrace bullying. One clear message of the sticker is I’m violent and proud of it.

So only the bumper sticker boys seem willing to admit to bullying. Thus, getting back to my original question, what do all the other (former?) bullies call themselves now, if not bullies? Cool Jocks? Misunderstood Geniuses? Free Spirits Unencumbered by Society’s Rules?

Curmudgeon, you have a TRUCK!!

I knew there was a lot to like about you :)

I was the smart-ass Amazon jockette. Didn’t begin working for me until I was almost out of college, though :)

Hippie freak intellectual, suspended from school for forming the Acting Committee for Independent Dress (girls had to wear skirts), suspended again for protesting the war, suspended again for leaving school to levitate the Pentagon (not quite, but if it didn’t have so many basement levels, I’m sure we would have succeeded). Came back after first year at college to attend senior prom in tied-died tee shirt & bellbottoms.

A true hippie freak would never have attended the prom. ;)

Ah, that’s where you’re wrong - it was the height of CAMP, and also served as an ‘eyesore in your community’ nudge for the school admins.

Back to bumperstickers - several of my agility trialing friends sport the ones that read “My Border Collie is Smarter than Your Honors Student.” (And of course, they’re right).

There is nothing smarter than a Border Collie. I want one of those stickers (and a Border Collie, too.)

High school…oh Lord. Once they abolished the dress code, I wore jeans every day. Then the students petitioned for a smoker’s lounge (and GOT one, can you imagine???) Back then I was a Renaissance woman, dabbling in literary magazine, yearbook, acting, public speaking, with a soupcon of National Honor Society and German Club but no athletics as I was a pre Title IX child. I wore a “Dow Shalt Not Kill” button (Vietnam era) to school and the assistant principal lectured me to not bash Dow Chemicals–it made lots of useful products. No argument from me–napalm certainly was effective!

Had friends in all camps–greasers, preps/jocks, even a nerd or two. Guess I was mostly a prep with a hint of grease under my nails. Preps were the social/academic leaders including some but not all jocks.

I have a sinking suspicion that I may be the youngest parent on this site (soozievt can back me up on this :o ) so I can certainly say that NOBODY dressed like hippies at my high school–although I kind of secretly wanted to ![]()
I was sort of a fringe person (good description, fireflyscout!) too. I was in marching band, but in the colorguard. If you have to ask what that is, you were less of a geek than I. I was a good student, but was not super-competitive and had plans to go to culinary school and be a pastry chef…so I wasn’t into taking AP classes or anything like that. I really did not fit in with the cheerleader/jock types, as I did not come from a rich family.

And about those bumper stickers…I was going to have one made last semester for my son’s car (the one he drives to school). It was going to say “My mom was on the dean’s list with highest honors at BSU” :p
But I would never embarrass him in such a way!!

Momsdream might give you a run for your money. We once had to sic the bouncers on her when she tried to play on our “I Knew I was Old When…” thread. Turned out she was younger than my step-daughter. Her plaintive complaint - “Didn’t anybody on this site have kids before age 25???” Of course, my DH did; that’s why I have a stepdaughter older than momsdream!

Signed, jmmom, the one with the sinking suspicion that she is the oldest one on this site  I know, I know, there are a couple of other geezerish contenders… and, as I always end these geezerish posts, jmmom looks young ;)

I missed that post by momsdream, but yes, I did have DrDrew before the age of 25! (I was 20  )
BTW, my H had full custody of his S when we got married, and I was his “mom” for 15 years. So now I am a grandma :D

Yes, DrDrewsmom, yes! Another grandma! Check the Final Decisions thread (or a few others) and you will see that jmmom is a step-grandma too. With a saga. My gS is 9 months older than S, and they both start college this year. I don’t quite know how you came to be a contender for youngest parent on cc at the same time as you’re contending for grandma status. But, whatever. I’m loving the company.

When do we get out the front porch rocking chairs, knitting needles and sensible shoes?

I was a smartass geek: Black horned rim glasses, t-shirt, straight bottom jeans or cords (refused to wear the in style bellbottoms) Was a sarcastic wise guy in class, took special thrill in pointing out teacher’s mistakes.

Well I wear Birks almost exclusively…does that count? ![]()
My granddaughter just turned one, so she is years away from college.

Maybe. But I’ll bet you I’ve been up more hours. At least that’s what my much older W says about me. LOL.

Jmmom is the person who sometimes thinks that she may be the oldest person on this thread, but of course she’s wrong. Curmudgeon may look like the oldest person on this thread, especially after being up too many hours.

There’s no trick to being the oldest person on this site (and I might not be that person). All you have to do is delay having kids long enough.

Oh great, NOW he tells me ;)
