John Hopkins, MIT, Duke... the bunch

I am a sophmore who is 14 years old-i want to get accepted my junior year(2007) i will be 15 then.

SAT: 2200+
SAt 2: MAth level 2- 800
physics- 620
biology-740
chemistry-760
worldhistory-700

AP: calc level 2- 4
biology-4
physics-3
chemistry-5
world history-3

E.C: FBLA (future business leaders of america) 3 years–went to state every time
Washington state science fair recognition and prizes 2 years
KSEA math competition-4 years-- first place, second place, thrid place, and one year with nothing :frowning:
president of school’s science and math clubs(2 years)
Honor role
Some community service (nothing excessive)

Aiming for bio-engineering…

If my chances are low, what other colleges?

also i did piano for 8 years
honor society
Many science (most biology) camps and summer classes
accepted to U.W summer program inorder to get algebra 2 credit when i was in the 7th grade

I want to graduate my junior year because i have taken all the classes they can offer me for my particular interest (bio-engineering).

classes i have taken:
guitar 1
ap physics b
ap biology
english 1 and 2
ap english
ap chemistry
precalculus
ap calculus
ap world history
spanish 1 and 2
botany
marine biology
P.E (duh)
running start biology (college)
AP statistics

I don’t think it’s a good idea to go to college at 15. If you must graduate early (which I don’t recommend) you should take a gap year or two to travel, commit to a passion, volunteer, etc. 15 is an extremely young age, and colleges usually don’t accept such young applicants. Of course, this is your personal choice and you may have a very good reason for wanting to graduate early. Even if you have taken all available math/science classes, there are always electives, English, and social studies classes that can be a lot of fun (they are my favorites). But if you are set on graduating early, I would say that MIT, Duke, and JHU are all high reaches. I really don’t have enough information/experiences to recommend any other colleges.

Most of your SAT scores are impressive. Better get that physics up to 750 at least though for MIT id say, cuz that 3 on the AP will definitely hurt. Although your course load so far was challenging, your AP scores are not too great. Your ECs and awards seem fine though. Anyway, id strongly discourage applying junior year. Even if you do get accepted, your AP scores show that you might not be ready for the competition at the colleges you listed. If your school doesnt offer any courses that interest you, take some online courses.

I see. I atleast want to get accepted to John Hopkins, which is a fine medical school. I want to devote my life into saving peoples’ lives with research… that is why bio-engineering and fields similar to that will be my future degrees in college(those or bust).

Especially since you want to enter college at age 15 you will have a very hard time getting accepted, even at state schools.

MIT is going to immensely difficult because your stats aren’t as good as some of their rejects. Plus, the atmosphere is intense and I doubt they would think you due to your young age can take it.

JHU & Duke probably will be the same due to your desire to be in BioE, which is very difficult and the admits at those school out-stat you.

Actually I’m not sure many BioE programs would accept you just due to your age and the not perfect stats needed for a person of younger age to enter college early. The reason is that colleges do not think you would be ready to be in such a new environment at your age and especially when you are in the cutthroat atmoshphere of BioE.

The main problem with being accepted at such a young age as well is the maturity level. It is going to be a lot harder to make friends since college is the time to do that, and everyone is going to be about 3 years older than you. I would tell you to just wait till ur a senior and then get into the schools of your choice. By then i’m sure the schools of your choice would def. accept ya.

uh when will u complepte english 4, american government and economics? well in any case you arent getting accepted that early…especially to those schools…

if you want to go to jhu med school you have a better chance if you are applying from another undergrad school. not to say you cant get in, but schools dont like people to be there from undergrad through grad (and you are going agains hypsm, etc. students for spots). however, jhu undergrad will put you in great shape for med school in general. also, i dont know why anyone would want to graduate high school early. i think it hurts you because you are young, dont have that senior year which is supposed to have the most rigor, and why would you want to be on your own at such a young age. i know cmu offers juniors to apply ED so that may be more for you. also, 15 is way too young to know what you want to do. if most people change majors twice when they are 18+, how often are you going to change yours at 15?

dont take this as saying you cant, you can if you are strong enough. your scores are very good for your grade and stuff.

side bar: how did you take so many aps by your 10th grade year? my school only allows you to do 1 your soph year and none frosh

Haha, I applied my junior year too (I was 17 though). I applied for engineering (BME) at Duke and got in ED (probably the only way I could do that). Here are my stats if you want to see them:

SAT: 2170 (760 on math and reading, 650 on writing)
SATII:
Math IIC: 800
Chem:800
PSAT: Soph year: 219, Junior year: 232

APs:

Soph year:
Calc AB 5
Bio 5
Chem 5

Junior year:
Calc BC 5
English Language 5
Physics C Mech 5
Physics C E&M 5
US History 5

I took the usual assortment of 3 years of english, 3 years of math, 3 years of social science, gym, health, comp skills, blah blah blah got all A’s

Cumulative GPA: 4.0 (unweighted), 4.2~(weighted, I really don’t know)
Class rank: definitely top 10 out of 200+(maybe even top 5, didn’t bother to ask)

I also took 2 summers of uni courses down at the local U: 2 course of general chem, 2 courses of general physics, 1 course of C++; all A’s

ECs:
QuizBowl senior co-captain and nationally ranked (3 years), science olympiad state championship team gold medalist (2 years), state ACS chem olympiad winner, US bio olympiad semi-finalist, math league 2 time AIME qualifier (3 years), varisty swimming (3 years), random volunteer tutoring.

Yeah so I got into Duke engineering school ED on that, hope it helps

i think you should wait another year to graduate, and maybe just take some classes at a local university, because of the whole maturity thing…it probably doesnt seem like a big deal, adn i can understand wanting to get ahead because you obviously have the intelligence to do it, but you don’t want to regret later not enjoying high school because you left too fast,or that you didnt really experience college…i was thinking about doing the same thing, cuz im also 15 and going to be a junior…but i decided not to because i want to stay in high school for awhile…but anyway…if theres really nothing in high school for you, i guess you should just go ahead, but i would slow down a bit once you’re in college… good luck :)…oh and sry…i have no idea about your question…cuz im still in high school …

Take another year. You’l be much happier going to college at 16/17 than 15/16.

My point is, if i wait until my senior year, do you think i can make it? I’m not those type of 2400 or 800 studying robots… its just that i want to dedicate my life to research in the miology/medical field. I am pretty passionate about that.

What makes you think that it will be any easier applying now? If anything, you can build up your stats with another year…you’ll have plenty of time for your passion, but you have allow yourself time to grow or you’re going to regret it…you have the rest of your life to pursue your passion, right now is a time in your life that you are never going to get back…make the most of it…

I applied early partly because I didn’t think my chances were that great. But I do agree that 15/16 is a bit early, I only applied because I would’ve taken all APs senior year anyway, so why not do the real thing.
